Hello all. After recently purchasing my first Mercedes i have discovered that even though it has a Uk map and knows my location, if i go to enter a destination i am not given the option of entering a post code but rather am asked to enter the state or province of my destination. Its a 2011 W212 with an NTG4 head unit. I have purchased some updated map dvds from ebay (probably a waste of money) with the hope that the update would give me a uk set up rather than what looks like a US one. Unfortunately after loading the first dvd i get a message saying its not compatible. Not sure if this is just because they are from ebay or because of this strage US setup if got going on. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome.

The NTG4 did not have support for UK 7-character postcode.

I believe this feature was added at a later time via a firmware update.

New firmware files are provided for free by MB, but the update process require STAR diagnostic computer so it's a dealer-only job (or specialist), and they will charge for labour (one half hour to one hour)

The maps themselves can be updated DIY simply by buying the DVD set.

Depending on where in the UK you are, you should talk to www.comandonline.co.uk who will be able to sort-out everything for you.

NTG4 does not have 7 digit postcode, only 5 (German style!). Not sure if it came in with the facelift in MY2011 and NTG4.5, but I have NTG4 fully up to date (thanks to comand.co.uk). I long ago gave up trying to enter a location by postcode, I either use the postal address or, having looked on Google Maps to see my destination, use the Map facility to set where I want to go.

Sounds like the OP's unit is defaulting to USA, you should easily be able to re-set the country to UK, or it may need plugging in to STAR to reset it.

As an aside, one major benefit of NTG4 is that you can use "second user" DVD's to update it, whereas later systems require a PIN from the MB mainframe specific to your VIN. However, it is wise to only use genuine MB DVD's if (like me) you DIY updating the maps, there are too many horror stories of "aftermarket" DVD's appearing to install, stalling at anything up to 96% - and no way back so the Comand system is bricked - expensive!
