Steam from exhaust/ water consumption.

I saw a thread recently regarding water consumption and steam fro exhaust. An engineer friend of mine had a similar problem on a170 hp seat Leon and having done all the usual checks , head gasket etc. narrowed it down to the cooling circuit on the EGR system bleeding water into the engine. I don't know how Mercedes systems operate but it's a god one to bear in mind .
