at the recent service, it was recommended that the steering damper should be changed.
Doing a quick search on the forum, it looks like its a DIY job and the part is fairly cheap.

Question is, i've not noticed any degradation or adverse feedback on the steering wheel - is it worth getting my hands dirty? what would the typical signs of a tired damper?

leaking fluid! sometimes all the fluid may have drained and you wont see anything if its been cleaned, worth changing as they are under £20 to buy if i recall correctly and two bolts off/on. it got rid of the vauge steering and excess tramlining i had.

MB sell a lot of these dampers....nice easy 5 min job charge 1/2 hr customer happy as it has not cost a fortune and it sounds like a safety issue......the last time the MB dealer recommended (yet another) damper replacement I got suspicious and had a look myself. Lo and behold there was nothing wrong with it.
Maybe yours really has gone but I would check it before wasting a small amout of money.

Remove bolt from one end and push and pull it through its entire stroke so long as its smooth and no sticky spots its fine and obviously has some resistance:D
