hi everyone

e350cdi coupe

when I turn my steering wheel from staionary lock to lock it makes a knocking type grinding it also does it when I reverse the car as well. I've taken it to 2 different mb specialists and they have both said it's solid underneath and all mbs make that noise when turning the wheel.I don't by that a company would make a car that makes a noise when turning the steering wheel can anyone help as it's doing my head in

thanks

Has it always made the noise or is it a recent thing? In my experience the noise you describe has usually been worn track rod ends /drop links which usually gets progresively worse and you will start to hear it most of the time when turning the wheel or on rough road surfaces not just lock to lock.

Worn rod ends are fairly easy to identify with the car on a lift and a pry bar to check for movement and are a cheap fix so I'm suprised they haven't suggested it.

Obviously it could be something else but I doubt it's something "they all do sir".
Unless you've got a packet of polos rolling around in the glovebox I'd go to a simple back street garage and ask them to check the drop links and rod ends whilst I watched.

Hi

Have you checked the power steering fluid, my e350 recently had the same problem, turned out there was no fluid in the power steering holder and there would make noise when engine was cold. Problem has been rectified following new fluid.

Hope this helps.

Nice 1 many thanks for this I will go today and report back on what they say

The noise started doing it after a few month after putting new wheels on 19"

took the car today and it's the inner track rod arm thanks everyone for your input nice 1

1 other question. . would a faulty inner track rod make my steering will shake I've had wheels balanced and heck for buckling

It's quite possible if it's worn enough there will likely be movement in the bush which would allow that wheel to move slightly left and right.
Hopefully a new track control arm will sort it all out.

once done i will report back and let you know how it went

Mine has always done this, spoke to an Indy and apparently all sport suspension e classes do this

mine never did this until a few weeks back so i hope the tie rods will solve it
