Steering lock/car start issue

In past two weeks, I've noticed the car will set to steering lock each time I turn the key to the off position, which it hasn't done previously.

It can be a bit of a fight with the steering wheel to unlock and so turn the ignition on to start the car.

My car is a 2005 C-Class 200 diesel estate classic.

I also notice that sometimes the car will start, but will cut out.

If the batteries in the key are getting old, would this be the cause of the issue?

A relatively simple fix and get out of jail solution.

Thanks for any advice offered.

I have not experienced it myself but I understand that if the EIS fails with the steering locked you are in trouble (stranded) , One of our members will be along soon to explain further.

Usually better to replace it while being what seems to be 'warnings' of imminent failure.

My emulator arrived, which is great.

BUT, would anyone have a technical drawing/diagram of the W203 ESL, so I can figure if it's possible to remove from the steering column without having to remove either the steering wheel and column.

Cheers

PS:L while there are many videos on YouTube for removing ESL's from W204s, the unit looks like a re-design, so have only seen a couple of bench test type videos. Useful to see how the unit fails, but not enough information
