Ok so my 2008 w204 C63 has had a steering lock failure, MD main dealer quoted me £635 fitted but say it could be possible EIS also but they cant tell until the steering lock is fixed? Is this correct?

Garage Diagnosis.

  • Investigate nonstart.
  • Suspected ignition lock
  • Steering lock needs replacing.
  • Once replaced needs Re program

My external warranty company refuse to pay this is what they say they cover, do you think it needs disputing?

Steering  The following components are covered: Column shaft & tilt mechanism & couplings, hydraulic pumps & reservoir & pressure pipes, steering & idler boxes, rack and pinion assembly (including hydraulic rams and electric motors) and track rods & track rod ends

Ignition system  The following components are covered: Camshaft sensors, crankshaft sensors and ignition coils.

Any help is appreciated?

Think you are not covered

But isnt the steering lock technically an ECU?

Electronic control units (ECUs) & computers  The following components are covered: The air conditioning, anti-lock braking system, automatic gearbox, central door locking system, fuel injection/ignition/engine management/alarm/ immobiliser, steering and suspension electronic control units (computers), that were originally fitted to your vehicle when it was first manufactured are covered (upgraded or revised software and firmware, including software and firmware patches and updates, relating directly or indirectly to any components of your vehicle and any retro-fitted ECUs & computers are not covered)

You need to look under electrical, not steering. Sometimes some warranties aren’t worth the paper there written on.

The ESL has a motor in it that fails.

Mine failed and luckily, it failed in the unlocked position. I fixed it myself for £15 for a like for like replacement motor off eBay.

If yours has failed in the locked position, then the ESL needs to be cut off the steering column with a grinder, and then obviously a new unit, which means coding etc too. It locks itself to the column for security.

The car won’t start because before the EIS will start the car, it needs a signal from the ESL to assure it that it’s disengaged, for safety.

I did a thread about mine with pics, but it’ll only be of interest if yours has failed unlocked.

Mercedes should be footing the bill for these steering lock failures regardless of age of vehicle.

Try these guys..http://www.replacementmercedeskeys.co.uk/...they may be able to help.

I've used them before and they came to my home from Birmingham and specialise in the Merc EIS and components.

You can also try Home

They replaced the motor in my steering lock and came to my home to do it.

Note...EIS and steering lock components are not covered by Warrantywise or Warrantydirect.

I've argued the ESL issue with rac warranty and they wouldn't have it either.
