e63 AMG W212
Hi,

Can anybody tell me if my E63 AMG has a steering lock or not? I have a 2010 W212 with electrically adjustable steering wheel. I am trying to get a replacement key made and the locksmith says he can't hear a steering lock and is worried that it may have been fitted with an emulator.
Many thanks
Malc

^ How is the locksmith going to code the key to your car Malc?
Unless he has access to Xentry and can programme the key it will not work.
Normally its programmed in Germany when the key is ordered from the dealer using your Vin#

I have a 2011 W212, and I thought the same thing when I got my car.
Turns out a lot of these around this vintage have an electronic transmission lock, and no steering column lock. Which is one less thing that does have a tendency to fail on some cars over 100k miles, so a good few hundred quid repair bill avoided.

To check for sure, put your VIN into 7zap, and navigate to the steering parts diagram/list.
Putting you VIN in means that the parts diagrams will be specific to your car.
If you can't see the steering lock on the column listed then you don't have one 👍

Thanks for that. I've put my VIN number in, but I cant work out how to read the table that goes next to the diagram. Is there a user guide anywhere?

Apologies, I should have been more clear.
For the w212, IF FITTED the steeing lock is now on the column, as is appears to be with most modern Mercs e.g. the current w205 C-class and the previous w204.

The steering lock for the W212 (and the W205 as it happens) is listed as item 200 in the diagram.
Part 200 will always show up on the parts diagram for the W212.
If I put my VIN into 7zap and navigate to the steering column section, part 200 is not in the big list of parts down the right hand side because it is not fitted to my car.
The list of part numbers usually updates to your specific VIN if you search by VIN, but the images are usually generic across a range of cars in the model.
Any Mercedes part numbers listed will usually include any relatively recently part number revisions/replacements.

Older models (e.g. w203, w211) had steering lock on the steering wheel. See image below and item 50 and bolt 60 that engages to lock the wheel. In the parts list to the side of the image in 7zap it will tell you that part 50 is the steering lock and give you the Mercedes part number.

Hi, can I ask why you're getting a replacement key made?

The advert for your car clearly says 2 keys.
If it only has one (or one working key) you should go back to the trader and ask them to correct the key situation (either repair or replace if missing).
If it's only 1 key provided, maybe someone else on here more familiar with car sales could give their opinion on whether it would be worth asking the trader to rectify this, as what you have received is not what was advertised.

If you are after a 3rd key, then please ignore.

There are several companies that can do it. Replacemercedeskeys is an example
I do know of this company but when you mentioned speaking to a locksmith I assumed (wrongly) that it was somebody local.
RMK need to be with the car to make a new key.

RMK have a good reputation and are in the same trading estate as MSL who are well known on the forum for AMG remapping work;)

The seller has promised to pay for a replacement key.

It is a locksmith in Ringwood that has given me a quote. I need to take the car to him.

Thanks - that makes sense. My Vin comes up with no part #200, so I assume mine does not have a steering lock.

That makes sense then.

I went from a w203 with the steering lock just behind the key slot, to the w212 without a steering wheel/column lock. My first thought after purchase when I realised that I couldn't hear the steering lock disengage was 'oh bugger, have I got a big bill waiting for me', but a quick trip on this forum led me to the same advice and checking process with the VIN you've just done.

That VIN specific parts list also comes in mighty handy if you are looking at getting the exact correct part number to check part prices and their competitiveness.

I wonder if you can help - had an issue with a dead dashboard - not starting, spare key worked. Cleaned out "faulty key" still not working. A few hours later it decided to work. Had both keys tested and they were fine.
Chap said EIS was OK and it was probably due to steering lock being stuck open. I cannot remember when last the steering lock engaged. Checked my VIN as you suggested above and there is no steering lock listed:

How did my steering lock previously if there is no steering lock and any ideas what caused the dead dash?
Thanks MrG

My w212 has an electronic transmission lock, but no physical steering lock, hence no sign of the steering lock in the electronic parts catalogue

Do you know how to remove the locks from your door by yourself? Have you done it before? It won't cost you much if you contact locksmith n5 or any other specialists to have the locks removed. The chances that a locksmith will cause damage to the door are low. In addition, a proficient locksmith will do all that is required at halftime saving your nerves and time saving your time and nerves.
???

I did not know they had a transmission lock INSTEAD of a steering lock......I thought that not having a steering lock was an MOT failure.

EDIT...it is according to the test manual.

REASONS FOR REJECTION
2.1.4
a. A steering lock mechanism inadvertently engaging
b. a steering lock mechanism missing or fails to engage
c. an electronic steering lock system malfunction warning displayed.

EDIT...it is according to the test manual.
Is it not like some other features (such as certain lighting) in that if it is fitted it must work, but it's not a fail if it wasn't fitted?
