Steering wheel

I need mine updating a little. I do like the flat bottom style, but not at those prices. I have found a place in Germany which will recover the wheel in a finish of my design / choice / material for a very reasonable sum, only they will take about a week to turn it around.

I'm wondering if I could source an old fleebay / breaker yard steering wheel from a W203 (or older models?) cheaply, and use that while mine is away. Obviously the controls might now work, but as long as it steers the car, that's fine.

Also, daft question perhaps, but can anyone confirm how to get the steering wheel off? Presumably airbag cover pulls off, and then it's self-explanatory...?

Thanks

There are a pair of torx screws accessed from the rear, then remove the airbag and undo the large nut holding the wheel on.

make sure you don't switch the ignition on with the airbag disconnected as that will trigger an SRS alert which will need resetting using a diagnostics machine.

If not bothered about triggering the SRS light, just clamp some molegrips onto the shaft and drive like that for a few days...

I have a W203 Mercedes AMG Steering wheel with Gear Change Buttons in the garage. Could be persuaded to part with it for a modest contribution...

Bare wheel - switch pack and airbag would need swapping over. Can take pics.

Hiya mate, what I would add is it's quite a long torx bit tool to get the air bags off - a special tool that won't be much from a dealership I'd expect - & might be a good investment as if you 'round' the torx screw out it will be a nightmare (you certainly wouldn't be able to drill it out of the airbag !!) I've got one in my toolbox if you want the part number off it to order? Should only be a litterally a couple of quid to buy?
Also, obviously do handle the airbag with care when you've got it off & don't touch the 2 pins of the airbag with your bare fingers or any kind of conductor as you unplug it or once it's off, as I've never actually seen it happen but they warn on WIS that it may go off if you do.
Cheers :)
