Steering - where's that weird moaning noise coming from??

My S500 W220 (99) started making weird moaning noises when you tried steering it when the engine had just started up. Seemed okay, as the noise usually went after the first few minutes. However, its moaning all the time I steer it now... Seemed a bit odd I thought.

On the way home tonight I had a brainwave - maybe I could post to MB Club to see if anybody else knew what was going on... So I sped home in eager anticipation, only for the steering to seize up outside the house! Felt like I was driving a petrol tanker....

Hmm.. doesn't sound good. Any ideas before the stealers bleed me for my hard earned $$cash$$??

Check your power steering fluid level - I'd bet money it is low.

If it's anything like our car, it will be the passenger seat!! Don't tell Mrs Dazzler that I said that!!

Sorry I couldn't be more use, but I think the fluid level would be a good place to start.

Yep, my TVR used to do that. Make sure the wheels are straight when you check the fluid level. Then you will have to work out where it is leaking....

What type of fluid should I use? Can I buy it from Halfords anyone?

No, only genuine MB fluid recommended for these cars, buy it from the dealer. Find out where it's leaking first or you are only pouring your money on the floor.
