Hi,

I have a really noisy steeper motor clicking from what sounds like just above the left hand side of my glove box.
Anyone know if you can reach it/access it without taking the whole dash out?

I'm just about at the point where I'm going to drive the thing through a wall and into an endless pit of fire...

Also, Anyone got any ideas how to remove/replace the central speaker in the dash. I think the cone is bust...

Thanks in advance.

I had a clicking noise on my S205 C Class. Did not know how to get at the stepper motor and did not want to risk making more noises by doing a strip out. My solution that has worked for over two years now was to get an aerosol can of WD40 PTFE spray and give a good dose down the eyeball dash vents. The spray does leave a smell for a few days but it’s not unpleasant. Works well and if the noise did come back another squirt would be easy to do. Not sure that this will solve your problem but the clicking and noise like a plastic ruler being twanged in my car was solved for just a few £ and only minutes of effort.

Sorry but I cannot help with the speaker problem.

Have a look at this thread for the stepper motor:

+ this one for the centre speaker

I can certainly try.
Thank you

Thank you, ive read the stepper motor one and asked on there but no reply. I guess because its a old post.

I'll have a look through the centre dash one.

Thanks!

Have you sorted this? I had stepper motor issue on w203 coming from the same place near the glove box on RHD car (to the right of the glove box). It’s not that difficult to sort out as a lot of people and garage quotes make out. They’ve obviously at some point revised the stepper motor and the linkage arm, the part number for the old stepper motor is no longer available new from Mercedes and though they couldn’t even bring themselves to tell me the new part number they were happy to quote £125 plus vat for it (not fitted obviously!) Anyway there are tonnes on eBay available for around £10-20. The linkage arms are sold in pairs about £20 for a pair new. I think the old part begins a230 and the newer one a203 (the stepper motor that is). You don’t need to drop the lower dash under the steering wheel on an RHD car to access the usual culprit area.

tools: t20 bit, t40 bit (to release two captive bolts), 10mm socket, ratchet and extension, Small precision flat head screwdriver, flat head screwdriver, torch and patience.

parts: new linkage arm, and possibly new stepper motor.

Any joy or on the highway to hell / endless pit of fire yet?!

Is this any use..... I imagine they are similar ?

I had the w203 stepper motor go in the same place (to the left of the centre console/to the right of the glovebox).
I bought a replacement motor from eBay from an allegedly low mileage car for about £15 and a new white arm from Mercedes for about the same.
I could get to it by taking the radio and all the centre panel/console out (which of course meant all the arm rest to get all the trim off easily), but not actually the dash. Then with a lot of perseverance and some scraped knuckles and hands, I was able to swap the parts. It took me two full days over a weekend, but I also cleaned everything really well because as I stripped things down, it literally looked behind the dash like someone had poured a can of full-fat Coke in there 🤢

Edit: It turned out that it was the clutch inside the stepper that was slipping, and the lever was not broken in any way, so the fix in the video in the above post won't always be the solution.

Just to add to this in the fix may not be similar to that in the video (that fix looks a bit sketchy tbf ... may as well just go with a new linkage arm there no...?) anyway if you get those parts out probably a good idea to fit a replacement motor and arm then test... might help saving you going back in there again to deal with the same/similar issue. The bit that takes me a while sometimes is getting the central air vent off (pretty much the first step!) it’s a bit of a fiddle I find after that the rest seems more straightforward.

Not ideal I know but rather than the more difficult/expensive route of actually fixing the problem......

Does anyone know how to disconnect the system somehow to stop the clicking, without losing heat/AC and too many blower functions?

I simply do not have the skills to remove the dash etc nor the pockets to chuck money at a garage to fix it for me. I just want the clicking to stop :wallbash:

I discovered that turning on the charcoal (cabin) filter stopped mine from clicking
Not sure if my 320 has that fitted?

It won't let me upload a photo. It's a solid arrow pointing towards a hollow arrow situated inside the drivers side air flow position bezel.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I have the Thermatic heating system rather than the Thermotronic so no activated charcoal filter. Appreciate you trying to assist.

I think in order to stop the clicking sound you would have to gain access to the culprit area anyway to remove or break the stepper motor linkage arm - which I don’t think is a wise choice as if you get that far in the procedure may as well replace rather than break. It’s really not an expensive job if you do it yourself and take the time, but if you are not confident to remove the dash access the behind the radio area then fair enough, I’m wondering if you may have a local car radio installer type place that may be able to give you a more reasonable quote for this job perhaps - though this might be a bit of a long shot.
