Recently fitted an eBay bootlid spoiler as mine didnt have one for some reason :bannana:

Used the 3M supplied tape which worked for around 1-2 days before the ends starting to pull up. I then went to my local car parts shop and bought some heavy duty tape. Worked a treat for nearly a week until it rained and once again the ends pulled up.

Any one have any suggestions what I should use instead? any type of sealant I can use?

If you have a good local sign maker near you I would pop in and ask them if the have any VHB Tape (Very High Bond). It can come in various strengths depending on applications so ask them what they use it for. Take a bit of the tape that came with your spoiler so you can compare. 3M do the best VHB tape,

I think that with your kit you just got the standard double sided.

VHB tapes gets used for bonding metal and acrylic panels and letters together so a good strength one should work.

^ This. Or ask at your local body shop?

Most times I've had issues with double-sided tape it's because I haven't managed to get the surfaces properly cleaned and degreased before use.

Failing that a tube of "No More Nails" from B&Q should do it... :D

Ebay is not always your friend!

Tony.

hey Karl , good clean first, inc removing wax

tbh, mines the same on one side and that was using high bond bodyshop 3m tape.

sure way would be to bond it on.

I've used silicone (as in the kitchen sealing stuff) on several cars - sticks well but does take some hours to cure

Thanks for replies.

There shouldnt be any wax on the car, I havent added any and I have cleaned it maybe 20 times since I bought the car. I cleaned it down + used alcohol wipes before attaching.

The main problem is the shape of the spoiler/lid. As its very curved it natually tries to ping back into place.

The heavy-duty tape I got the from the auto shop holds the central section in so much I cant phyisically remove it by pulling it, its just the corners in question.

I think ill try taking to my local bodyshop, if not will try no more nails :)

i used clear silicone sealant on mine

Tape wont work... it has to be a strong bond... Tiger seal is excellent but paint supply places will sell the exact stuff you need.

Thanks again for suggestions. Picked up some Stikaflex tonight - meant to be as good as tigerseal + I couldn't wait :)

What chrisdean said. Search on here about the Taiwan spoilers, there is a thread that says about putting it on a radiator before fitting which helps the spoiler flex, then I suppose it cools down in a better shape.

Hair dryer can work too, but the nack is to have the rubber warm when you fit and stick then it cools to that shape....3m is pretty good once stuck...

Mine's on with supplied 3m tape and has stayed stuck fine, I did warm it up on a rad and degrease the paint first though.

I'm waiting for a car that will be applied with Stargard. Do you guys think that will affect the adhesion of an eBay boot spoiler?

Billy

i find tiger seal to be best on these types of things

We used to call this Rhino Snot...sticks to anything!
