E320 Cabriolet, Honda VFR 800 - both red!
The auto gearbox on our recently purchased 1996 E320 appears to be sticky when cold - basically it won't change up out of first gear for about the first 30 - 60 seconds of driving, even taking it up to say around 3500 revs. After the first minute it works fine. Car's done less than 40k. Any thoughts on why this happens, from wiser heads than mine, much appreciated...

My C180 is very similar, it is to warm up the cat in the quickest possible time but mine does change just at higher revs until warm.

It is to warm everything up, engine, oil, gearbox and cat. It is programmed into the ECU.

Never noticed it on my diesel though come to think of it.

Someone told me, as above, that its to warn everything up quicker, that was on my e220 coupe. I have a cabriolet now and that doesnt do it at all although its exactly the same engine and box! i reckon it can be adjusted somehow...

That's the great advantage of forums like this - wiser heads abound!
Thanks all for the advice / assurance.

Indeed this can be programmed out by the main agents on certain boxes - certainly makes early morning take-offs from home a little quieter!
