My ML had its first service a month ago and the day after (this may or may not be a clue) the Airmatic suspension went rigid as my wife was driving to work. 'Airmatic malfunction' it said on the dash. Called Mobilo and the car had registered a 'possible Airmatic control fault' but reset itself when powered down/up. Learned from the technician that the system goes into rigid self preservation mode when the ECU is confused so not to harm the struts with full extension or compression.
12 days later and the same thing occurs. Dealer takes car in and replaces the Airmatic ECU.
Another two weeks and the same thing again with the same fault code. Dealer finds that there is a software upgrade available so installs this. Chief technician takes the car home for the night and on his way back to the dealership the next morning....Stiffmatic!
Dealer and MB Milton Keynes are now stumped and have never seen this particular issue before. Next plan is to change all displacment and pressure sensors on each corner whilst I guess my wife will be in a loan car for a trip to lakes tomorrow
I know there were some issues with pump relays on W220 but I have not heard of any issues on 221 or 164 models, unless you know differently?
