E220CDI (S212)
Hi All,

The stop/start system on my E220 CDI estate (2012 model S212) doesn't seem to be working, as in, I can't even remember when it last stop/started (at least a year ago), and the 'ECO' symbol on the display is constantly yellow (as opposed to green). Granted, I don't drive much these days, mostly short trips and not many of even them. But occasionally I drive 300+ miles on the motorway, which I would've thought is enough to charge the battery properly etc., but still no.

Anyone know what this indicates? Does the auxiliary battery need replacing? (The car is 8 yrs / 120k miles, and AFAIK the aux battery is still the original.) Or is it more likely to be an issue with the charging system, or the stop/start itself? Or is this just what happens with old age?

Thanks,
robaa

Could be a low battery charge which will disable the stop start I believe, or on an 8 year old, maybe it's just given up :D and needs replacing

9 out of 10 it will be one of the two batteries.

Either the main battery or the auxiliary battery.

Only way to be sure is to change the batteries.... one at a time.

But just before you do that, get the fault codes scanned with STAR, just in case your issue is the 1 in 10 which isn't the battery.

My C250cdi 2012 is exactly the same, stop start has "stopped"
I measured the aux batt volts at just over 13V but I suspect the battery has failed. I ahve a new one which should arrive today. So weill fit it and see what happens.

It seems to be fairly common this issue.
I may be lucky, I may be the 1 in 10 LOL

Got mine from Tayna battery's £43 delivered. cheaper than Mercedes OEM :)

If it works then you will be part of the '9 in 10'... as I said, in the vast majority of cases it will be either one of the two batteries (main and auxiliary).

My friends BMW had a problem like this. He replaced the battery for it to go soon after. Turns out after nearly melting a Noco booster pack that his starter motor was bad drawing huge current and causing massive strain on the batteries killing them a bit quick.

So I gather from all this that it could be either of the batteries? Would hate to change the main one 'just to be sure', as it's not giving me any other hassles. So should I change the aux one instead?

What a waste of good money .

The short answer is Yes.

In my opinion you are better off without it. I’m a believer that using stop/start on the om651 is one of the factors that leads to premature timing chain wear. What you save on one hand, costs you on the other

I do turn it off, but I still like to have all of the systems in my car fully functional, even those systems that I do not actually use.

i get where you are coming from. The need to actually turn it off everytime I find more annoying;)

When a veteran? independent / specialist speaks you get the truth .

Stop Start disable on W204 is beautifully easy , others maybe not so .
