strange clicking noise

Whenever i turn the key in my ignition to start it in the morning or at any time for that matter i get a loud constant clicking for around a minute coming from the centre of the dash.

It also makes this noise occasionally when i switch the ignition off but i dont know if it last the same amount of time as i have usually got out of the car.

It got so annoying i thought something was loose so in the only way i knew how to fix things i started thumping all round the dash when it was making the noise, but to no avail.

I have a suspition it has something to do with the heating but than again this may be a wild shot.

Any help is much apreciated.

Does sound like a HVAC flapper to me but then i'm not great with noises unless i hear them personally.

Sounds like it could be the fuel pump - but I wouldnt call that loud. I was describe it as more like a clock ticking but much faster.
Then again, its probably not that.

This is a common fault on Volvo s40s, sounds an identical sound to the one you describe caused by the air recirc mechanism failing to operate.

sorted, its the stepper motor link bar that has snapped, aparently a quite common problem
