Strange intermittent noise

Hi, not all the time but alot of the time, especially after a drive say 10+ miles my car makes a very strange noise only when moving from the gearshift area.

Doesn't always do it and sometimes never at all, have found going uphill makes it louder and sometimes it can be really loud like the attached youtube recording made last summer with microphone close to gear lever.

Car has been doing this for probably 2 years and hasn't got worse or better, mechanics can never recreate the noise even on a test drive.

Car is a 2006 c180k manual saloon.

Parking brake cable touching the prop due to fixing clips breaking?

^+1 a very common fault on the W203's and a fairly cheap fix.

Thanks i will get mechanic to look at the handbrake cable
