For the last week or so I have been hearing a strange noise from my 2001 C180. It sounds a bit like a quiet version of the noise you used to get when using cardboard and a peg to make your push-bike sound like a motorbike. (Older members will know what I mean) Sometimes it's loud, sometimes it's quiet, sometimes it doesn't appear at all. At first I thought it was my comand system but the car has just come back from a B service with the diagnosis that a bearing in the gearbox is on the way out. With the cost a new box will incur I am naturally interested in your thoughts if you can spare the time. The car has done 83k.

When and at what area of the car is it loudest ? front seat / back seat area ?

Can you hear the noize when the engine is running and the car is stationary ?

Auto or manual gearbox??
might be worth an oil topup /change if this wasnt done at the service.
Consider a REPUTABLE gearbox repair specialist who offers a warranty for a gearbox repair as a cheaper option if the gearbox needs replaced.

6 speed manual. No noise when stationary, also noise changes a lot from quiet to fairly loud although radio will drown it out at normal level. Noise seems to be from front area of cabin. Thanks.

It could be the gearbox bearings but it's strange how the noise comes and goes.
Is it just the gearstick and selectors rattling?
