Strange place for rust?

Does anyone know what this particular rust bubbling could be? It's in both rear door frames of my '96 S280 - exactly the same on both sides - obviously connected but my mechanic (a Merc man for 20+ years) can't imagine what could be causing it. The two matching areas - less than an inch in diameter - are in the lower rear corners of each rear door frame and are only visible when the doors are open.

I'm going to drop it into a bodywork specialist to take a look - but just thought someone out there might be able to suggest what I should expect ...?

Water ingress not draining out?

Agreed. The water is running down to the lowest point and not getting away. Can't see how this can be rectified. There will be no access to the inside of that panel at that point.
