Strange Sound when applying and then releasing brakes

Hi All, I have noticed an odd spring like sound when I put my foot on the brake and then again when I take my foot off. It sounded like it was coming from the back so I had both rear wheels off but could not see anything obvious. I thought it might have been a spring but they were both fine. A neighbour suggested disc pads but they were replaced last March. Does anyone have any thoughts please. I have got it booked into a garage in Cadnam on Wednesday but if I can save some expense, all the better. Thanks, Paul

How carefully did you inspect the springs? I ask because they often break at the very bottom, just the last inch or so, where it's hidden by the indentation in the cup. You need to get your head in there, with a torch and mirror, and follow the coil wire right to the end.

Hi Stratman, I have to admit I didn't look at the very top or bottom as you rightly say they are in cups. Besides I was lying on the drive getting cold and grubby. My neighbour has a garage and he is going to take it with him on Wednesday. It must have heard me say I was thinking of trading it in against C250. I have a 60's strat.

Garage rang me earlier, the reason for the strange sound is that the rear subframe has cracked and I need a new one. I am know at a quandary as to whether to scrap the car or pay to get it repaired. Car is a 57 plate and has 87K on the clock.

Ouch! That's a different level of seriousness altogether.

I'd definitely follow the advice in your new thread of contacting the DVLA, see what they have to say about it.

I have contacted Mercedes in Southampton and they want to see the car to assess it and then decide if they will repair it from that.
