On both mine and my wife's laptops we have occassionally encountered a strange thing.
Sometimes the pop up window (as in when you send something to the printer) opens and then the contents keep flickering. Not always - just sometimes. If it was one of them I would have thought something was loose - but on both (running windows 7) seems too much of a co-incidence.

I am currently running virus scans (Kaspersky 2010) and malewarebytes and will see what they come up with.

Malewarebytes has just come up with NO INFECTIONS....so that's ok.

Does anyone have any ideas???

Printer Drivers; update to the latest, is it an HP printer?
and update your display drivers.

I get the same with my Windows 7 PC.

It seems to happen when I have many Safari tabs or windows running, if a pop-up opens (any type) it flickers, the cursor flickers as well. My CPU monitor shows >80% load on all 4 cores! Even with all my usual apps open and running mega graphics tasks they rarely top 30% and the only one or two cores.

Task Manager doesn't show anything unusual.. Anti-virus scans show nothing, Defender nothing ..

The only way to restore normality is to shut down Safari (and only Safari). Once closed activity slowly (30sec) returns to normal and I open Safari again, all's well.

Yes I am using Safari too....perhaps I ought to switch over to ie8 or firefox on PC - trouble is after iMac I prefer using safari..As WN stated it's not just the printer window popup inwhich it occurs. I tried MSN messenger and that flickered too...

Hmm, the plot thickens... I have Safari installed (but never use it), and haven't come across this before (Windows 7 as well) - I usually use Chrome for my browsing needs.

While you like to use safari, why not try a different browser for a while and see if the flickering disappears? If not, then you have at least ruled out one potential problem and can then go back to Safari :)
