An interesting debate. Just to add another twist to the car/bike argument, what about the race on Top Gear between the Ariel Atom V8 and the BMW motorbike?

The Ariel was basically a race car with lights but the BMW was in standard road trim. The Ariel just beat the bike.

Subsequently, the guy who rode the bike (a British Superbikes rider - IIRC) said that the original test was going to be the Ariel vs. his race prepared bike but when he arrived for the test and the producers realised his bike was going to totally cream the car, they asked him to use a road bike instead. Couldn't have the fastest thing to ever go round the Top Gear track being anything other than a car .

Although I know that a full-on race track will always be lapped fastest by something with four wheels, I don't think you need a 37 mile TT course for a bike to beat a car. Anything with a few reasonable straights will do the job.

On twisty race circuits a go cart is usually quicker than a Bike. e.g. Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire. Wouldn't fancy 37 miles around the IOM in one though!
