Friends...........
I will shortly be the ripe age of 64.
I have worked nearly all my life within an engineering design environment. Specifically the electrical/instrumentation petro-chemical industries such as oil exploration, pharmaceuticals and nuclear power generation.
Sounds quite grand, but I can assure you it can be very mundane and repetitive - just like most jobs.

Any ways, I would now like to run down to do something local for the last few years of my working life.
I have looked through a few job sites but nothing jumps out at me.
I still need a small income, so charity work is not an option.
Does anyone know of a slot somewhere that might suit a mentally active intelligent (?) individual.
I can turn my hand to most things and am not afraid of hard work, early starts / late finishes and subject to the limitations of a 63.5 year old body, can cope with most things.
All I really seek is something within commuting distance of home (Orpington, Kent).
Any suggestions ? ? ?
Or am I beating my head against the brick wall competing against younger, fitter models ? ?
Thank you for your time.

Have you got a B&Q near you? Part time job there, maybe?

Our local one seems to employ a fair few knowledgeable old dudes (all due respect)

I took early retirement, wife informed me I looked bored so I looked about for a part-time job. Ended up at our local B&Q :)

Totally different to any previous work experience and somewhere I can put my 30+yrs DIY experience to some use. It's physically demanding (lifting & carrying) but a real laugh and get to meet all sorts of folk.

Purchasing, repair / light restoration and selling of cheaper classic cars ?

Turning round a relatively small number of cars each year will keep you busy without being onerous and may also allow you to utilise some of the skills from your career as an engineer.

I think B&Q would be a good shout. FIL thought about it for a while as he knew someone who worked there and it was pretty good setup.

Great if you know your stuff and the customers also like the voice of experience. I hate going to that sort of place and a 16 year old tries to tell me best stuff to use to decorate my house whilst he lives in his mum & dads house and probably never decorated in his life!

Seing as there's not retirement age now, we would anyone think to retire?

Just start making a nuisance of yourself at work, just little things... not enough to get fired, just start getting in the way a little bit.

Since they now can't force you to retire, they'll have to come up with a mutually agreeable golden handshake which could add a significant enough amount to your pension fund that you wont need to look for that small boost in income.

Professional and personal pride mean that most people want to bow out in the right way rather than under a cloud.

Nice idea but I am a director of my own one man limited company - so I am more or less self employed. So your idea wouldn't work I am afraid.
So no sickness pay, no holiday pay and no redundancy handouts either.
If you want money - you have to put in the hours. Simple.

LOL!!!!

I swear my previous boss was trying to do this. He was/is an incompetent menace.

I think he actually got promoted rather than sacked/guided out though.

Got to be worth a try!

Its a thought, but there are too many variables and unknowns for this to be a viable option. I would need premises, so I would be paying out quite a wad before any payback. I am not prepared to risk hard earned capital on something that may not work. I just need a low paid job.

setup your own small handyman business or something? Sort of "finish those diy jobs your husband never got round to" type outfits.

Find a specialist employment agency covering your area(s) of expertise and ask them ? There is short contract and part time work for qualified technical people - if you have the 'right' quals
