Driving home this evening along a dual carriage way, I encountered a cyclist on a bend. He wasn't wearing any reflective clothing, nor a helmet and didn't have any lights on. It was raining and dusky and he was ambling along the 'fast lane' while I was approaching the speed limit. Fortunately I saw him, so avoided soiling my bumper, bonnet and windscreen. I hope he bought a lottery ticket tonight 'cos he must be the luckiest bugger alive! Assuming he made it home that is.

The speed limit is just that. It's not a target. It is the highest speed you should ever drive at on that road, in good conditions with good visibility. "Raining and dusky" doesn't sound like the sort of conditions where one should be driving anywhere the limit.

An animal in the road wouldn't have had any lights either.

Without knowing the piece of road, its difficult for you to judge the suitabiliy of the speed I was driving. I didn't say I was at the limit, or what that limit was. For reference, I wasn't doing much more than 50mph in a 60 limit. ie. well within the legal limit, and within the limit of my car in the conditions, albeit dusky and wet. Trust my judgment here. I just feel sorry for the fool I could have hit had I not been more careful than he was.

As for animals in the road - that's life. I've hit plenty before. Call it evolution in action.

LOL. You must be one of the people who drives down a major road such as the 50 mph limit A4 (until fairly recently the 60 mph A4) at 35 when it's dark creating a densely packed bumper to bumper convoy of seething frustration & ill will.

It's dusky or even dark roughly 50% of the time &, this being the British Isles, it rains a fair amount of the time.

What you mean the type of person that as soon as the road is clear speeds up above the speed limit to make it as awkward as possible to get past so they can stay in charge at the head of the convoy as soon as the road narrows again:doh:

Then once you have booted it past them they immediately slow down to annoy the suckers left behind yeh i love them to.

This is one of the reasons i hate going to Norfolk:D

Yes, sounds like the OP was driving like an outright maniac sending animals without DRLs diving for cover as he careered down the dual carriageway like mad max late for a christening......
