Hi, well after my W210 320cdi HP fuel pump gave up spectacularly on the M4, it’s sat on the drive feeling sorry for itself and I’ve now bought an 03’ Honda Accord Type-S as a run around
I’ve since reached my savings goals and have decided to take the plunge and have bought an almost mint S124 E320 petrol, that’s being converted with an OM606 in super turbo guise.

The conversion is only just being started, so I have time for any adjustments before anything is put in place for the final time.
My first question regards a catalytic converter. The car is a 1996 but the engine is obviously out of a newer W210.
Now as per emissions laws, it won’t NEED one to pass the smoke test. But what about the car actually needing 1 as per the model and year etc?

How do I go about getting the engine changed on the VOSA (or whatever) database?

Any ideas?

Cheers

Ben

Ben:If you have an almost mint 320,I'd say leave it well alone

I agree.

I have been looking for an almost mint 320 S124 for a few months now.

Prices are only going one way, ripping the heart out of it seems criminal to me. :(

I did wonder if it would cause some upset. Which wasn’t my intention. However, it was more right car, right time for the project. I wanted a decent A/C clad shell regardless of engine. I couldn’t find one for decent money and then 1 popped up for the right price.

M104 for sale anyone? “Only” covered 279k miles.

Anyone have any info regarding my questions?

MOT tester manual states-

If a vehicle first used before 1 September 2002 is fitted with an engine that's older than the vehicle, you must test it to the standards applicable for the engine. The vehicle presenter must have proof of the age of the engine.

If a vehicle first used on or after 1 September 2002 is fitted with a different engine, you must test it to the emissions standards for the age of the vehicle.

Ahh ok good stuff, I did wonder if it would have to be taken from the year of the newer engines vehicle. So essentially it’ll need a catalyst then! Thanks for clearing that one up for me, the legislation involved is a bit of a minefield!
