A careless supermarket trolley had an incident with my wheel arch on my W205. I would like to avoid having the whole wing repainted if possible. Does anyone here have any experience of smart repairs on something like this? A part from some missing paint, there is also a small area circa 3mm-5mm of bare metal!

Well local smart repairs can be very good or very bad,it depends on the company,we have some horror stories on here including them using the wrong colour paint,so what you need is to find the best one where you live, the repair is not hard it is below the fold in the metal of the wing and also you have a join of two panels and the damage has not gone into that second panel, done well you will not be able to tell.

Try Chips Away, I have found them to be both good and reasonable. Send a photo to your local branch and they'll quote you. At least you'll have a starting point.

As suggested there are very good and very bad smart repairers, and in my experience going with a franchisee of a big brand is no guarantee of quality.

Personally I would go with a recommendation of someone with a good reputation - whereabouts are you?

Thanks Bobby. I am in Croydon, South London.

As I said local smart repairers can be good or bad,V6GBJ says his local Chips Away is good,my local one I would not trust to paint a kiddies bike,as I said take your time and find the best one local to you.

I echo what the others have said regarding smart repairs. Whether it is a windscreen repair or body repair, it's all down to the person doing it. You have a few choices

1. Touch it in for now to stop it rusting
2. Smart repair although be prepared if they do not do a good job - could require a respray then
3. Get it painted and be done with it. I think you are looking at circa £200 for a wing

If the car is in mint condition, I would go for 1 then 3 at a later date or just go with 3

I can't tell from the photo, but if its pearlescent white (such as Designo Diamond White), then it will need a proper bodyshop repair to blend in to the rest of the panel.

I know a guy who is superb, it’s like witchcraft, but he’s in the Midlands. Hopefully someone in your area know someone similar 👍🏻

Hi Bobby
I have a small scuff on the leading edge of my drivers door that is driving me nuts (happened in Tesco car park within 5hrs of ownership)!!!😡😡
Local chips away etc say they won’t touch it as it’s a 2door + wing respray to blend!!
I really can’t believe this- like you say I’m sure it is a dark art and specialists are thin on the ground but I live in Huntingdon Cambridgeshire so midlands isnt that far.
The rest of the car is great but every time I go to open the door my eyes are drawn to this blemish.
Contact details would be greatly appreciated 👍

So frustrating! PM sent 👍🏻

There is a bodyshop near us in Guildford that does a “smart repair” of sorts If damage is light. Might be worth seeing if there’s a body shop near you that offers a similar approach? My wife’s car picked up a small scuff and they offered a number of options with a sliding scale of finish basically. Similar scuff to the OP and that was about £200 for a localised spray and blend.

as a preventative measure I use these on all our cars

Car door protection for almost all cars | Doordefender Webshop

they dont protect for every eventuality but they do help!

I would go for either 1 or 3.

And, for a full wing respray I thoroughly recommend Andy at Tony Fawkes Automobiles in Park Royal (West London):

I am trying to avoid a respray of the whole wing as this will invalidate the MB paintwork warranty, unless done via an approved MB Bodyshop for £££ - I was quoted over £500 to respray a bumper whilst the car was in the MB Bodyshop for other warranty repairs. Luckily I declined, and the bumper was repainted under warranty as they needed to match the paint on the bumper to match the respray on both wings.

Hopefully, a smart repair to a small area will go undetected if a warranty claim elsewhere is required later in the future. From my W210 rust bucket saga, it seems that MB only tests the paint thickness away from the rusted areas - usually in the middle section of the affected panels.

Chipsaway, some good some bad. My local one is brilliant. Only thing I can add is take it to one who has a unit to carry out the work. Do NOT get a mobile guy to do it

Thanks for this advice - yes it makes to get someone with a proper workshop to do such a repair rather than on a wet windy driveway! Thank you.

I had a similar thing on the Lowe's supermarket car park. Had a long conversation with lowes customer service and we found a good solution for both of us. It definitely should be like that and supermarket or shopping mall should take responsibility for their trollies. Next time it can hit a little child for example. Not cool.

Give Matt a call (07515) 335783 for a look/quote, he is based in Sanderstead. He used to do repairs for MB main dealers and now does mobile work. I've not needed his services *touchwood* but know him

I have exactly the same damage in exactly the same place on my sons BMW 1 series and am getting Chips Away to quote next week. Feel sure they can do it but will post before and after on here for comparison this is the beforefront scuff1.jpg
