I was suspicious of Paul Hollywood's big continental road trip. OK, we all know he's a petrolhead but would this be more British Bake Off false jeopardy?

But last night's episode was good: great images and interesting facts - from the opening sequence of him driving a 600 Grosser, all the way through to his three mile canal cruise around the Wolfsberg VW factory.

who knew that VW make more currywurst sausage (7 million) than they make cars?

    Summarising the German character....

Both good in their different ways....

Having spent too much time working with both Italians and Germans, I thought their summary of German character was bang on the money. So much so that they ought run a course for British politicians, who mainly think that Johnny Foreigner ought to just learn to dodge and weave a bit, as the pragmatic English do....

Once you understand that Germans have to follow the rules, you've got the most important lever over them. They never accept a plucky Brit "just improvising."
