Swap a R171 engine in a R170

I have seen someone put a W202 engine in a W201. Can I do the same on a SLK? Thereafter do I need to notify DVLA for the modification?

I don't deal in anything legal, what he can do or not do to his car by law is irrelevant to me.

What he can do to his car from a technical view point is right up my street and i think you will find that a 171 engine will not end up in a 170 without the job being so expensive and impractical that the answer is NO!

We're not just talking a little bit of simple fabrication here, he might as well look into fitting a jet engine.

Oh dear, I hope you don't steal valve cores.

As you can see we have slightly crossed purposes here - you referring to putting a new engine into his car and me referring to his requirement to notify DVLA.

As an aside, apart from putting a metro turbo engine in my mini, I wouldn't waste huge amounts of money transplanting engines between vehicles, but hey, we are all different.

That not impossible, I have seen people put nitrous oxide and it zoom like a jet engine.

I was hoping Ollie from Prestige to reply and do it for me then I can assess the road tax requirement. I seen in the other thread someone put a W202 engine in a W201. How much is an engine? £1K.

If you had both cars with all the wiring. Yes.

I cant really see the point though. What are you hoping to gain? Would it not be better to get a SLK320 and supercharge that. Much more fun and possibly do-able under £5kish.

No Ollie. I wish to save on road tax. I want a smaller engine. It currently got a 2 litre compressor emitting 236g/km of CO2. With a new R171 1.8 litre engine it will emit 188/209g/km of CO2, will you do it for me and how much?:D

I think it would probably be cheaper to
1) pay the extra RFL

or

2) buy another car

Whats your budget?

The steering system of both cars is VERY different and will need loads of fabrication. Expect it to take many weeks.

For a start I would need a 171 complete to do the job because of the wiring and control units.

For what it would cost I would just buy a 171

Nothing is impossible take some of the Brabus models in production or the SLK55 with the SLR engine so of course a transplant is possible.

What i said was and i quote "i think you will find that a 171 engine will not end up in a 170 without the job being so expensive and impractical" now take what Ollie said in his last post "For a start I would need a 171 complete to do the job because of the wiring and control units" that to me sounds expensive and impractical, just like i said.

You would have to ruin a perfectly functional 171 to stuff an engine into a 170 and even then i wouldn't place any bet's on the functionality of it's jury-rigged electrical system and thats without getting into all the other systems. No logic to that at all.

Am I missing something - but if it's just to save on road tax - isn't this a rather bizarre way to do it? Embark upon a costly and complex engine replacement when you could put the money towards the extra road tax for some years to come

Sorry - but like many other threads these days - this seems rather off the wall to my simple brain.

W201 and W202 both use the metal key. The big deal is that in order to start the engine on a R171 engine you need to rewire the whole car.

People sometimes ask me if I can get an W211 E55 engine into an W140. The answer is yes. Will it start ? Probably not.
