Very sad. There is workshop banter and then there is bullying.

I hope everyone involved gets prosecuted

    -----------------------------------------

George's line manager, Simon Wright, who admitted to playing a number of pranks on George, told the inquest: "I was in the workshop when a prank was played on George and he was set on fire.

"It did not go too far. We knew where to draw the line," he said.

    "It was not bullying."

Unbelievable. It's the 21st century ffs.

Setting him on fire in a locked cage...not bullying!!!!!!!!!

They all seem a bit thick from that report.

I've shared this on Facebook...because they understand Facebook.

Sad news indeed , to much bullying now-a-days is being brushed off as "banter".

A mates younger brother served his time in a garage in Glasgow , on the day his apprenticeship finished he turned up at work ready (dressed) to go for a few drinks with his workmates. He was grabbed and his jeans tied at the bottom with tape and the garage oil line fed into them before being turned on as some form of initiation into the trade.

They all thought it was hilarious , even the owner, until a few days later when his dad turned up and politely told the owner that a few of his mates would be on their way from the Glasgow docks to have a chat with the owner and the so called hard men in the workshop if something wasnt done straight away.

I think the owner thought he was on a one way ticket to somewhere off the west coast of Africa and reimbursed him directly for clothing and "inconvenience" , he handed in his notice directly and has been spannering in Australia for around 30 years.

I was an apprentice mechanic at Mann Egerton's in Norwich many years ago and had quite a few pranks played on me but nothing so serious as this poor lad was subjected to.

I had hoped this sort of thing was of the past.

Those poor parents must be beating themselves up over this.

If the courts don't, I wonder if the customers will indirectly.

My old MD has just cancelled his R8 order this morning and is taking his business elsewhere. I'm sure he won't be alone.

I started as an apprentice plumber aged 16 and never saw anything like this at all. Maybe these mechanics have a bit too much time on their hands.

Couldn't agree more. It's absolutely disgusting and unforgivable. All those involved should be sacked and prosecuted with the franchise being removed from Audi UK.

I've been very close to trading my S8 in and pulling the trigger on a new TT RS, been debating it and weighing things up over the last month.

This whole story has just killed it for me though.

I've a good mind to email the director of Audi UK actually...

I've been harsh on trainees but not to that extent

The usual, sent to screwfix to buy random things that don't exist, driving off a few metres when they go to get in the vehicle, tying them to a (stationary) excavator boom arm, locking them in dark cupboards, making them run an 'air test' during an asbestos survey by running around the room with a bin bag and tying it, digging a hole full of water and running a race around site making sure they fall in, removing the ladder before they get off a (low level) roof etc...

All in jest, and you really have to judge their character. 90% can take a joke and then initiate it with the next trainee. Setting fire to someone isn't funny! Hope this affects the dealership as it's not a good look

All the more unfortunate given that they have recently opened their expensive new gin palace showroom further down the A33.

I have a background in psychology, and my initial response to sensationalist headlines that this and that caused someone else to commit suicide, is that people rarely commit suicide due to one incident, and there is rarely a single cause, instead it is usually the 'last straw' on the back of various other difficulties that they may have experienced in their personal lives, including mental health issues, it's the accumulative effect, etc etc.

But having read this... yes the poor lad had a background of mental health issues, but... given what I've read, this is one of those rare occasions where I did not feel I could say any of the 'usual' things as per above.

I run my own graphic design thing on the side but as it's web based, I can't pull pranks on people over the internet

The above I've done across many roles and jobs, mainly construction. Perhaps in that industry everyone is used to the pranks. Never had a complaint or a tear, plenty of pranks pulled on myself when I was a 'greenhorn'

Never done the stupid prank stuff to other people and never had them played on me. Plenty of quality banter though. We went to work to work and not screw around 'pranking' each other wasting time and money. Hytner idiots.

You must have kept away from the common building sites Darrell.

I was an apprentice in the 90's working on Redrow building sites around the North West. Lots of practical jokes played on me but all taken on the chin and none too serious. I was dunked into a barrel of fresh cold water but as it was a summer day (like today) it was very refreshing. :D

It was a rather well to do old school company.

We always had such a laugh. Some of the old boys were fab guys to work with. I couldn't wait to get to work.

I spent 2 years of my apprenticeship refurbing the Connaught in London. Mid 80's. Great times.

I go to work to get that 8+ hours done as fast as possible, mainly 80% doing no work and 20% looking like I do work. Wether it's mucking around or doing something irrelevant

Count yourself lucky you're not an asbestos stripper. Common pranks- urine in the shower gel, clothes hidden so you're stuck naked after decontaminating, talcum powder in the filter of a face mask, taping asbestos board to your back (automatic clearance fail) putting it in your shoes

I worked in garages from 1970 until 1982 and I plead guilty.
One that comes to mind was getting some lip from a particularly cheeky apprentice.
I grabbed him and gave him a hickey on the neck.
He had a first date that night.
