Tailgate opens automatically 2001 W203 C220CDi Estate

Hi,
wonder if anyone can help. My tailgate is opening automatically when I drive off the boot lock clicks and opens and I have to stop and shut it or when it doesn't do this the opening lever doesn't work at all. Something is sending a signal to unlock/open the car tailgate and it will do it if parked and left unlocked without the keys in.
Very strange and I wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem.

The release mechanism is on the drivers door. I would be looking at the buttons.

Hi,
thanks but no button on door and alarm working ok,trying to find out what sends a signal to the tailgate to unlock it so you can use the catch on the tailgate to lift open. At the moment it is getting a random signal from somewhere and opening on iits own accord.

Any possibility a button on the remote key fob is stuck / defective / worn, presuming the remote fob is in range of the car when the fault happens?

Many thanks Dec,but no the fob is fine. My suspicions is the SAM in the rear is playing up as the central locking is fine but the tailgate is playing up.
