A few years ago I suggested it might be a good idea to allow non firearms trained police officers to use this equipment. I recall considerable objections  :)

I also suggested the use of head cameras and who can remember our very own Police Liaison spokes person 'Timmy' voicing his objections? :) :)

The only suggestion that I've made that still has not been introduced is a recorder type gadget? arrest the culprit, caution them, and carry out all the required police procedures, then hand the tape over to a clerk\whatever to do ALL the paperwork, thus keeping the police officer on the streets.

Who knows, the Home Office might still be reading our posts as the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary is now one of ten forces to allow non firearms officers to use this electronic incapacitator. First with the head camera and now this.

Good stuff.
Besides that I would add a transponder/GPS that tells the station/control exactly where each individual policeman man is and even a panic alarm which calls asistance when he/she is in serious trouble and does not have time to speak.

When an officer came round to take a statement from my son they were showing me their radio, and it does all the above. Big brother knows exactly where they are at all times, they only need to press a button for routine procedural calls\acknowledgements. How times have changed and what would Dixon of Dock Green have thought? :)

........... that little Johnny should have had a clip round the ear?

Good points BTW - give paperwork to the paperwork specialists - would be less chance of c0ck ups and free up more face to face time.

You should all be aware that a taser is a particularly unpleasant way of controlling people. Small darts penetrate the flesh, and a charge of SEVERAL THOUSAND volts flows through the victims body.
This can disorientate the person, lead to fits, and sickness for several hours.

Seems like a good idea to me! :D

Knock ten bells out of them with a piece of 2" x 2" instead

I have pictures of a barbed hook stuck in someone's body and the arresting officer saying, "Dance, baby dance!" as they turn up the voltage. :D :D Or perhaps as the voltage increases you could toast some bread on the sparks? :)

Shocking, or should I say, "Revolting?"

I think we all miss Timmy's contributions?

I was going to go into uber-flame mode before you said that. A special state of being and all-encompassing anger reserved only for hippies and ne'er-do-wells.

I think at least 90% of my colleagues at work are champing at the bit for Taser to be rolled out to ALL officers. It's currently going into a wider roll-out which will mean it being issued to support groups and the like, however they are generally not the first on scene.

I was discussing a situation the other night, when a deranged individual had burst into a supermarket seeking to do harm to the security guard. Whilst late there were many shoppers around, and the man was wielding a knife with clear intent to use it.

He was eventually disarmed after unloading SEVERAL cans of CS onto the subject and wrestling him to the floor, however everyone I spoke to agreed that TASER would have brought a swift, safer and decisive end to the situation, which had the capacity for serious injury to several people.

...and the supermarket in question would not have had to put up with tearful shoppers for the next few days!!
Teach them to peel the onions. Your example merely highlights the need for this equipment and if was something I debated a year or so ago. Thankfully it appears to SLOWLY be coming on line, but as the saying goes... Don't hold your breath.

Luckily it sounds like the numbers were there to deal with this violent individual, but most of our legislators\decision makers live in big cities where there is an abundance of police officers (relatively speaking) what about the bobby out in the sticks, twenty minutes away from any assistance? Having equipment like this can quite literally be a life saver. To all the liberalist 'what if?' brigade, I have always suggested it would NEVER be used on a compliant person.

A friend of mine bought an electric fly swatter from maplins the other day.

I have to say I'm surprised its legal - it gives you one hell of a jolt, great for unruly children.

Just dont try it on your tongue.

If you are on your own and a huge, crazed person comes at you with a knife.......
Not my experience and I certainly don't want one.
I would like to think that we all have a responsibility of care to-wards 'Our thin blue line?'

It's alright if there are a number of officers that are capable of subduing someone that is intent on causing you harm but what price do we put on personal safety?

Do you carry the latest type truncheon?

Usually those that advocate the peaceful option have not been up against someone that is deaf to any type of communication.

What options does a single officer have to deal with an extremely violent person armed with the fashionable samurai sword or baseball bat?

Forget the truncheon type weapon as that needs you to get close, CS gas is far to unpredictable and does not always subdue people (plus it might get blown back in the officers face)

What would you do?

This person will attack nearby innocent members of the public and your on your own but you have the option to use the Taser, truncheon, or CS gas?

John

Surely the 'darth vadering' of the police is merely treating the symptoms. rather than the disease..

If you are on your own and a huge, crazed person comes at you with a knife, then the measures that in place to deal with metal illness, excessive drinking, illegal drugs and self control are failing.

Trouble is, we live in a headline-driven quick-fix society, so tazers are seen as sexier than proper mental care.

Colin.

Now that is a reassuring answer!;)

Isn't prevention, preferrable? - You are on your own and a huge person walks by and nothing happens?
After all, if you've got a hammer, things tend to look like nails:)

Of course prevention is always preferable   but in the real world prevention sometimes doesn't work;)

Indeed, I suspect the trick is getting the balance right... something we haven't been too good at over the past few decades:( Thats what happens when politicians play social engineering while under the influence of power...
