My wife bought a new (second hand) car yesterday. The tax has expired so we need a new disk. Although she phoned and insured it yesterday the cover note has not arrived. Can I get a disk today using my insurance certificate (ie insured to drive any car) or does it need to be vehicle specific?

i doubt it. the registration on the insurance document has to be the same as the one going to be put on the tax disc., so you will have to wait for the certificate to come through.

No.
You need to show that the vehicle you are applying for has valid RTA insurance. What you have is a certificate that you are insured to drive unspecified vehicles.

Further info here

If it doesn't need an MOT Cert or has a new style Cert and you have the insurance policy details you can apply online (an extra £2.50). DVLA will check directly with the MIIC's databse. Shame that Post Offices can't do the same :(

But if you know a mechanic with insurance, they can get the Tax disk.....

You need either an insurance certificate in your name with the registration number of the car on it or a Traders Policy with cover for any car. I don't think a fully comp policy from another car is acceptable, even though it may allow you to drive any car. The policy needs to cover the car in question

You also need a V5 (or V5c) in your name and a valid MOT
