Technical details,MB engine/gearbox

Can you tell me the difference between ,
a M111 960 engine & a M111 961
a 722423 gearbox & a 722428

In both cases im interested to know if its difference is something external that can be swapped over, or, something internal

Bet someone on here knows !

pretty sure the engine its "cosmetic" so to speak.
not sure about the gearbox, could one be a 4 speed and one a five?

IIRC five speeds are 722.6xx
