Parked the car in tescos.. Was only going in to get a drink. I came out and some idiot had reversed his Ford Galaxy into the rear of my car.. Luckily as there was alot of people going in and out of tesco, someone got the plate for me.

Looked at the damage before getting into the car and theres a few scrapes and a few deep scratches.. Once I got into the car to reverse out of the car park myself i realised that my parking sensors were no longer working. the button on the centre console had a red light onit.

Went straight to the police station and reported it, giving them the plate and area, time etc.. I was told that an officer will go to the house of the driver that just drove off!

Got home phoned my insurance company and they are going down the route of claiming of the Ford drivers insurance which im fine with, BUT its taking a long time.. Insurance company are waiting on the police to go to the Ford drivers house.. Then the police wont give me the drivers details... Then the insurance company want me to give them the details of the driver? When the police wont give them to me!? All before I can proceed with the claim..

So should I just claim of my insurance? Get the bumper and the sensors fixed and forget about it? Its just taking such a long time everyone involved to do something about it!

Also can i request a new bumper? or is that not my decision? Will the parking sensors definitely get fixed? or will they overlook them as they are not physically damaged, but no longer work!?

You have my sympathy - decision would seem to depend on cost of repairs , your insurance excess £ and how desperate you are for work to be done.

My wife recently parked her car in Waitrose car park and came home with scratches on the drivers door where someone had bashed it with a trolley. No note from anyone so costs for repair are down to us......

Had a similar thing years ago, I parked my 325CI in a car park, went back to it to drive home.. Reversed and the front grilles fell off! Got out to check it and pick up the parts and my lights were half smashed, bumper cracked and grilles on the floor, luckily my companys insurance paid for it as I was away on business..

My excess is £100. Well it doesnt need a new bumper, but if they were going to give me one id take it.

I suppose its a job for a body repair specialist, I have enough of those in my area... Could I get the car detailed? including paint correction on the rear bumper (and the rest of the car ) ?

Would the insurance company help towards the cost or even the dirvers insurance company cover that if I was to suggest it?

Its cheaper than buying a new bumper.. Then the parking sensors would have to be fixed out of my own pocket.. :wallbash:

Quite why the police won't give you the drivers details I am not sure - because you can easily find out for yourself .

In this case you have a perfectly valid reason for requesting this information from DVLA , there is a proceedure and a fee to pay . You must provide a valid reason ( such as your car was hit by this vehicle which then left without providing details ) and you may need a police reference number , which you ought to have .

You can then provide the details to your insurer ( although they could just enquire on your behalf ) .

Good luck .

Thank you.. Ill get on to that.

With regards to requesting a new bumper and fixing the sensors- The insurers ( which ever one pays out) will have to return the car to its previous condition before the claim.

From my experience this usually means replacing parts rather than trying to fix them

I's definately push to claim from the third party so it doesn't effect your NCB

Good luck in getting this sorted

Yeah, I mean I would really like a new bumper... So I guess thats what ill request.

:crazy: effect my NCB? I've got 10 years + Nooo thanks! Third party is what ill be going for!

Thanks :thumb:

Think it is only a couple of quid to get the details. You will need the Police number though. Sadly it is how the private parking lot can harass you for payments, they just ask the DVLA who pony up.

m.

I have protected no claims.. So if I do end up claiming of my insurance.. I wont be affected, it seems.

Your insurance company should be able to trace the driver details from the car registration. Motor Insurance Bureau in Milton Keynes have implemented a system to cross-reference its records with those of the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to pinpoint motorists without insurance so why don't they use that?? I would also go back to the police station to get an incident/reference no if you havn't got one-- tell them the other driver has failed to get in touch with you and ask them if they are going to prosecute the other driver under the road traffic act for failing to provide insurance details after an accident. Read up on the relevant legislation before going in to see them.

Go to the Police and get a ref # / Check.

Ask them if they are going to prosecute / Check. (They said yes)

Still waiting for them to go about talking to the driver.

Even if you have protected no-claims they could still increase the premium because you have made a claim. The amount or percentage of discount against the premium might not be affected. I think this is one of the things covered by the term "uninsured losses".

Hope it all gets sorted in a favourable (to you!) way :)

Flat bonnet badge? :thumb: I've got a new rear and front badge for my car, just need to fit them.. Is the front one easy to do?

Be careful here as you are only allowed so many claims in a period, even if protected.

So you might only be allowed 3 claims in a rolling 5 year period for example. As you never know what might happen tomorrow never mind in 5 years time I wouldn't want to start using this unless I really had to

Fitting takes under one minute: Open bonnet, turn underside of ornament through 90 degrees, lift out ornament while closing bonnet (be careful not to drop it!), slot flat ornament into place then push it home (underside clips will click).

Sadly this sort of thing happens all too frequently - we never take our decent cars anywhere near supermarket / DIY store car parks, or indeed anywhere that has shopping trolleys. We either take the old wreck where damage doesn't matter, or park elsewhere and walk to the shop.

I've seen an elderly guy in a big Volvo estate virtually ram-raid into the front of a car parked in Tescos, and he just backed up and moved to another space. I asked him if he was going to bother giving his details to the owner of the car he decided to try and demolish and he just said 'No' and walked off into the store!! With people like that around what hope is there?:wallbash:

I saw a car do the same - he just drove off. I left my name and phone number for the driver to call me and told them the car that had done the damage. The woman cried on the phone thanking me as her husband had just lost his job and they were frantic with worry about the costs etc.

People have accidents - part of life. The people who make me sick are those that run away afterwards leaving others to pick up the pieces (sometimes - literary)

Too many people driving around with no insurance/road fund licence/MOT ----The old guy in the Volvo might well be one of those.

My mother and sister witnessed such a 'hit and run' once in a supermarket car park - gave details to the police who followed up , and received a nice bunch of flowers from the owner of the damaged car .

Re the OP's incident at Tesco - have you enquired whether there is any CCTV recording of the damage being done ? Don't leave it too long as recordings are normally only kept for a few days . If you can get video evidence showing the other car hitting yours it would prevent the other party turning round and saying you hit him .
