Came out to the car today and the ignition wouldn't accept the key. After a few tries and locking and unlocking just in case... I decided to just use the keyless go feature to start the car which I don't often use. Luckily that got it going.

Would I be correct in assuming its an EIS problem if everything works perfectly whilst using the keyless system?

That would be nice considering the price difference. So the ir part of the key could fail but not the keyless radio part?

Have been meaning to get a spare key since I got the car 13 months ago. Perhaps now is the time to get one and hope for the best.

You can check the LED by firing it at a camera and watching the viewfinder, however, the inductive coil could be at fault.

Thanks for the reminder, dont know why I didnt check that straight away!

13 months of ownership and this is the first little hiccup so far.
Not so bad for the immensely feared w220 and all its complexities.

IR LED appears to be working. Guess I better get the plastic out.
