Dropped my 202 in for its MOT test this morning, 1 hour later got a 'Its failed on emmissions, prob Cat) phone call.
Took the car to a professional exhaust workshop thinking i'd need a new Cat, they said "we hear this a lot, do yourself a favour & go thrash it down the road & when hot take it somewhere else & get the emissions tested" so off i went.
"Emissions are fine mate, well in" said the mechanic.
Then had to re-book for a retest, & now its passed, jeeeeez what a performance !

How has the government wasted your time ? :dk:

It wasn't within targets , it failed. You gave it a good rinse , it was , it passed. Happy days.

It failed because it wasnt red hot, once it was cooking it passed, which shows how idiotic the emissions test is as i wont normally cook it when driving.

Do you do a lot of pottering around ?

Cars that potter about all their life are notorious for failing mots , they need a motorway trip once in a while.

The emissions targets are fine , it's probably because your car isn't used enough that it doesn't meet them.

Not the governments fault , sorry. They can't have separate targets for 'popping to the shops' cars and 'motorway only' cars

Why is this the fault of the government? Or do you think that emissions tests are only for others?

The emissions tests are conducted at normal engine operating temperature and not when "red hot"

Another pointless post!

My car goes everywhere at max allowed speed (when other road users allow) & it went to Birmingham last week, i believe the govt's targets are set unreasonably, especially as ships & factories can belch out as much as they like with no restriction.

Do you have factual evidence to back up the latter part of this comment?
(Rhetorical!)

Mine does all this too , but not to Birmingham ( which I avoid at all costs ) and mine doesn't fail ?

The Emissions test is a waste of time. It's lip service to a larger problem. I've never failed it though. Not even with some real old cars.

No they can't under the smokeless zone laws.

My 1949 Allard passes every time as it meets the standards prevailing when built - ie none at all but still good enough to pass!

Possibly because your vehicles were not producing emissions in excess of the proscribed level? Plus the level of emissions that would cause a pass or fail is different according to the age of the vehicle from first use.

It is fatuous to say that the emissions test is a waste of time. The way exhaust emissions are achieved may be a debateable topic but not the aim of reducing those emissions.

If you really feel like having a Daily Wail style rant...

No rant here Will ;)

I support the reduction in emissions just not the wholesale way we adopted the implementation of catalytic convertors because the USA did.:D

Ships do have emissions limits,,,anyway they are unlikely to pass close to my house
I bet factories also have limits

I didn't mean you... :)

I know :)

It would however be good to have an evidence based debate on the merits or otherwise of different emissions reducing technologies, who knows, we may even learn something and contribute to greater overall knowledge? :)

I see no smoke. Perhaps Bennespipers is thinking of wartime navy ships?

7:00am on September 27th. If you could see what I can on my PC, 3 ships against the sunrise...No smoke.

I went on a Condor Ferries catamaran in the summer and it belched smoke like there was no tomorrow, it was late as it turned out, halfway through the crossing the 2nd of it's 4 engines packed up, registered to Nassau IIRC, because of the lack of regulations and therefore lower running costs than if it were a UK registered vessel
