I was reversing into a space in a very narrow street this morning, when I found myself idly wondering why the hatchback to my right was bouncing up and down. The noise like somebody squashing a biscuit tin gave it away. Being a complete numpty, I hadn't been watching my front end, and the wee hatch was firmly lodged on my bumper. In my half-asleep state I was fairly giving it some welly for the second or two while I couldn't figure out why I wasn't going anywhere
, and that didn't help the outcome, which is a well-f**ked rear door for the hatchback and a nice two-tone bumper for me. (at this point I feel I must point out that 1. I was just moving motor off yellows into permit space, hence legit half-asleepness and 2. however ignominious, this is my first incident involving another vehicle in 15 years, m'lud) Anyway, I left a note with my details and skulked off. That was 8.30am and the note, I see, is still there. What I also see is that the car I hit is rather badly parked, quite far out into the (very narrow) street at an angle, and also sports a deep grimy crease across both doors and the boot about a foot above my handiwork. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Irresponsible (never mind about me!) owner, previously-disastered car, etc, etc. I tried to do the decent thing, but now I feel uneasy - the owner might try to take advantage of my honesty/stupidity and nail me for the whole lot. In any case how to separate out the existing damage from new, and put a figure on it?
Far be it from me to say it, but me scraping the car hasn't reallly made any odds to it. Therefore should I go and swipe the note while I still can? I do live on this street and there was a witness, but he also saw me write the note. I think. I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on this.
