Guys, with my E280CDI nearing 3 years old and my own customers heavily leaning on my pricing I had a quick look for offers to pass on some of the pain!

I'm in the Midlands and have been offered:

Worcester (Drayton) - MOT at full price but free valet; 3yr+ service hourly rate and parts at 10% discount

Solihull (MB Retail) - MOT at "50% off" - £31 and servicing "at least" 10% of parts and labour and willing to price match locally.

Stratford-upon-Avon (Inchcape) - snooty and promised call-back didn't happen! Update - list for MOT (£53-10) & might match other service quotes...

I'm sure you guys have done better - post here!

HMPH!

I have been getting only 10% for my 02 320CDI

Thanks for the info ;)

MB Chester, owned by Inchcape, are advertising A service for £199 and B service for £349 on E320CDi (ad lists a variety of models but not all).

I've seen comments that some dealers will do an "end of warranty" check for free, onthe basis that they'll get any work generated.

Are you pushing the dealers to quote on the "package"? They're generally not very bright and will quote everything as if it's separate jobs.

I think they have quoted you for a minibus with additional seatbelts.

The MOT for a car is only £53.10 going up to £54 in April.

Yes I did question it. Their defence is that they "normally" charge £62 as most of their customers want a thorough check just before the warranty ends!

I have just tried for the "pre end of warranty check" for free and had three resounding refusals!

I don't actually need a service now (and won't until after end of warranty) and so I am getting the MOT at a good price local to me and the guy is very thoroughly checking everything "underneath" to see if there's anything looming that I can get under warranty.

I'm at 75k miles so particularly interested in any suspension/steering etc wear that might pass the MOT but still ideally need looking at.

The fees are set by the Government and are the maximum that you can be charged. If they are charging £62 for a MOT, they are breaking the law.

I had my car serviced on Tuesday at MB Bolton when I collected it I enquired about the cost of the MOT as I thought it was due and got quoted a price of £25.

I don't think that's true. The £62 arises because, if the garage includes the MoT on a larger list of works, VAT must be charged on all items, which is where the extra £7 or so comes in. I fell for that one at my "end of warranty" service and MoT. I was dead miffed. This was the "reason" I was given, anyway.

nah thats rubbish, they were fobbing you off unless they charged you the MOT price less VAT on the invoice and then added the VAT at the end.

The MOT price is almost always fixed inclusive of VAT.

When we do our invoices we have a subtotal for parts and labour then add on MOT charge seperately.. £45..

MOTs are outside the scope of VAT so VAT cannot be charged if the garage does its own MOTs.

However if the garage subs out the MOT then they have to charge VAT as they're providing the service of supplying the MOT. A lot of small repairers have been caught out by this recently and have been hit with chunky VAT bills.

There's some stuff about it towards the bottom of this page: http://www.motester.co.uk/mot-qanda3.html
