The E63 I now own.

I've got some snow socks in the boot, I know their legality seems to be contested, but their efficacy seems undoubted.

I had a call from MB Guildford, shock or shocks have been replaced, unclear on that but I'd think it's probably only one, so I can collect the car next week.

I've asked whether the expected lifespan of the rear shocks on an E63 AMG is five years and 50,000 miles.

I wouldn't try and use the socks in France (bit of an assumption there) if I were you.....the police were tight on having proper chains before, more so now the law has just changed again.

285's were never a standard fit on 204 C63's were they? 255 was the widest from the factory.....

It’s a fair assumption- and correct.

The car needs to take me to Chatel for the two weeks in the middle of January, and sit in a carpark whilst I ski.

I imagine those roads will be clear, the socks are in the boot as a just in case.

Didn't get a call back from MB Guildford. I choose to believe that this is because the service manager is too busy fighting my corner with Mercedes regarding the substantial discount he believes is appropriate for my shocks crapping out so early in their lives.

And I only say that as I remember a few years ago being stopped (with everyone else) in our resort of choice during heavy snow by the local lads in blue and told to chain up or turn around (I was driving an Audi A5 Quattro at the time). Anyone without chains was corralled into a car park and not allowed to move. Strictly speaking I didn’t need the chains, but obviously did as I was told and was actually really glad they were on as we drove down the mountain to be fair!

…and the Moon’s made of Wensleydale ;)

A man can dream.

Re:chains, all four wheels or just the driven wheels?

Both rear shocks (at 52,000 miles, full MBSH etc etc) are blown - one is covered in oil. The tyre on that side has also worn down to the reinforcement layer on the inner face, so a couple of serious MOT failure issues there.

So! MB Guildford have ordered one shock for tomorrow (the one that has thrown it's oil everywhere) but apparently the merely (!) badly corroded one is on back order with MB Germany, so no real idea of when that will be in stock.

I'll also need 4 19" winter tyres that will fit the stock wheels - all suggestions very welcome for those.

Should I have expected to have to replace the rear shocks at 52,000 miles? I asked the service chap and he didn't want to answer the question - which was fair enough as he would be answering "for" Mercedes in a way.
Funny enough my C63s went in for service in Poole and was told my rear shocks have oil mist on them. Just over 3 years old with 18500 on clock! They cleaned them and took it for a road test and only one needs to be changed. But was told they need to be done in pairs. So been quoted £890 for both this is with 50% discount. But the way I’ve been treated I’m very sceptical with them! So I’ve cleaned them myself and will check Sunday to see if its leaking and then decide if I get them done. I did have a service plan so I guess they make there money from the extras they do! If you can’t trust a main dealer who can you trust! 😩

That's interesting. Did they offer the discount unprompted, or did you have to hold their feet to the fire a little?

Yes offered discount unprompted. It’s just over 3 years old and I’m still shocked it needs shocks!

Yes, I can see why. I've not been shown a quote for the work they've done on mine, which is interesting in of itself now I come to think of it.

They mentioned ~£1,300 for the parts, no mention of the labour costs. Typing this out, I'm thinking that this is actually very odd - not being given a quote to approve before they did the work. Hmm.

E63 is back:

MB Guildford were very pleasant to deal with - total, dramatic difference to how unpleasant it was to deal with MB Bromley.

MB-G applied for "good-will" on my behalf for the damper dying at relatively low miles/years - which was summarily dismissed.

So! For future reference, 50,000 miles is confirmed as the expected lifespan by Mercedes UK for the adaptive dampers.

I have to say, after running around in a GLA 200d Sport that it's great to be back in my E63.

Bear with me here, what are the odds that my spare set of 19" OEM E63 wheels would also fit on a 2019 Marco Polo Horizon Sport?

They can come with a 19" wheel, but it's a 255/45/19.

It looks like the 19 inch wheels fitted to the V-Class are 8 inches wide with an offset of 52 mm, and fitted with a 245/44 19 tyre. Source information:

What’s the width, offset and tyre air of your E63 wheels? If you don’t know the width and offset them post a photo and we may be able to find out for you.

Off the top of my head I think the fronts are the same offset but 9" wide, the rears I want to say are 47mm offset and 9.5". I may have that the wrong way round though!
