Hi Folks,

Same old story - my 1984 500sec wouldn't start after standing for outside for 2 months prior to Christmas -one new set of heavy duty jump leads and my spare battery later - off we go on New Years Day no problem. Car won't start again the following week - guess I need yet another new battery but it will have to wait.

Tried to start the car today (Feb. 15th) with the leads and spare battery - it wants to start but just can't 'catch'. I know I put fuel in the car last outing on New Years Day but it seems like fuel starvation.

I raid the lawnmower fuel dump and add a little to the tank - off she goes :)

Now the good bit. Everything is going fine as I reverse to the gate and step out for a minute. Whats that whirring noise and what is that dripping from beneath the car?

Answer - fuel. So thats where my missing gas has gone.:(
It seems to be spraying onto the diff. Needless to say I just park the car.

I have jacked it up and had a look with the engine running to see if I can pinpoint the problem - but it just cuts out with a 'whirr'. The battery is now flat again of course after all this 'flaffing' about.

I can see two metal cannisters by the OS rear wheel I presume these are fuel pump and fuel filter but I'm not sure which is which? I think the 'whirring' is the pump trying to pump fuel which is practically non-existent just as the tank is going empty.

I am hoping that it is just a punctured fuel line but I can see, I think, 3 hoses in that area one of which looks like braided fuel line.

Any thoughts guys and would I be able to drive the car 30miles in its current state to the garage (I'm more concerned with safety here)?

Thanks in anticipation.

If I remember correctly there could be 3 canisters - a pump, acumulator, and filter. Do not drive it 30 miles, thats just crackers especially if you don't know where the leak's from.
Get it recovered there, then get the garage to copiously spray all pipe unions with penetrating oil over the course of a couple of days to try and avoid broken pipes which are a monumental PITA.
Quite possible it could be the pump leaking, been there. Shoudl pickup a s/h one easy enough, just make sure its up to the job.....

Thanks John - A sensible idea - it would be ludicrous to do anything elese. :)
Regards,

Mark S.
