A few people will get burnt.

I've been looking at prices for these kind of cars for a long time now and they are becoming more and more ridiculous.

Even cooking models are climbing up in asking price.

Who wants a standard F reg Austin Montego for £4k?

Nuts.

A friend bought an original Integrale 8v four years ago for £12k, been offered £25 now (but he's not selling).

My mates old man had a Capri 280. Was in fantastic condition, wouldn't have taken much to make it concours.

He got fed up of it, and left it laying outside for 3 years. Rotted away and he swapped it for some patio furniture. Wtf!

My mate has an Evo 2. Paid about 18 for it. You need to se what they are going for!! He also had an Alfa SZ cabrio and an Alfa Sud.

Silly money, but as with all collectables, the market decides the price.

I can understand the price obtained for the RS500 considering the condition, mileage and rarity, but apart from the engine it wasn't a particularly great car IMO. Rock solid suspension and tacky cheap interior spring immediately to mind.

Great fun though and the car thieves favourite for many years:D
Insurance companies rubbed their hands hearing you had one. The most I ever paid for insurance, and I wasn't a youngster either.

The car is Kent and is still in regular rally use. The rear exhaust ports are empty as it now has side flat exhausts ahead of the rear wheels. Not good to stand taking o the driver if he blips the throttle, unless you are wearing flame proof trousers. It spits.

It will end in tears for sure it's just when. I have a fellow Lotus Anorak who has a lovely 328 GTS Ferrari he has restored to a very high order.
I keep telling him at our monthly meets to sell it, then when the crash occurs which it will at some time he can buy it back for half the price or just over, although some cars after the previous crash did rather better than others so it's not such a cut and dry scenario.

I'll mention to my buddy. He lives in Plaistow (not the east London) so he may know of it already.

There is a bog standard Mk1 Escort Estate, base spec, albeit low miles and excellent condition that a dealer is asking £19,500.
The advert proudly lists it has the optional seat belts fitted..........

.............tumbleweed rolls past .........

I think the funny thing with threads like this, is that people are always astonished at the prices being achieved for rare/collectible/nolstagic cars like these - and then in a few more years time when even more people want them (or are in a position to buy) there are even fewer around (and £s are worth less in real terms) hence prices go up even more.

There's probably worse places to put your money than in finite supplies of quality examples of collectible items (including cars!)

People have been predicting a 'crash' in the classic market for ages so what does this latest set of results say about those forecasts over the last couple of years?

My neighbour recently purchased a 2.8 V6 Ford Capri in white with the wrong colour wheels and grille, the headliner is falling from the roof and its nothing special but it is (curiously) 100% rust free with no obvious signs of respray (engine bay , inside boot etc.) . It is all bog stock inside , seats ,radio etc.

He paid £8.5K for it and he sees it as a little hobby that he drives regularly and he is happy with it.

A guy around the coroner has a Scimitar GTE as a daily drive and I regularly see a young bloke driving his Triumph Toledo past my house, a neighbour 6 doors down has a dog rough 60's Ford Mustang (not V8) that he potters around in on weekends. His neighbour opposite daily drives his Bentley continental GTC . Just around the corner parks a pristine W124 E300 Diesel MB Estate that is often seen towing a 4 wheel farm trailer full of dirt or ladders etc.

My neighbour opposite me (who owns a garage) has an Audi A8 V8 that he is going to chop and marry up to a VW T5 van...he recons there is about 25mm in the wheelbase that he has to sort out !!.

It makes the fact that I drive my only car , a C55 AMG estate to work ever day seem almost normal !

What I am saying is none of this mob (including myself) are speculating on the value of our cars, we are just using (enjoying) them as ...er...cars.

Pete

I also own a C55 Wagon. She is no longer a daily driver but is a weekend fun car and well looked after. I enjoy the car rather than consider the value.

I love seeing older Fords / Cars in General given another lease of life and looked after, well past their sell by dates. Old Fords are starting to really go up in value now, as a new generation starts to appreciate the looks that we took for granted.

I am 'interested' in a white Peugeot 1.9 GTI that is laid up near me with a dead engine (head gasket). I just worry that a free car could be a massive money pit ;^) But then what a car if it is well sorted.

My 124 Estate draws smiles wherever it goes. I stop in traffic and people wave (nicely) and smile. I have lost count of the amount of times somebody has uttered or sung the immortal words "Oh Lord Will You But Me A Mercedes Benz"

I love the fact that it transports me back to happy times and always leaves me feeling better getting out it than when I got in it. My Bank Manager thinks it is the best purchase I ever made (given the state of my overdraft now).

Here is the local W124 being kept 'honest'. it is great condition but is always in use , with the back full of paint tins and the trailer often attached. I will try to have a chat with the owner next time I see him.
