You'll find a nice second hand watch by Fortis, Oris or Tissot for under £300.

For a brand new skeleton, like you mention, go for a Chinese made one by Seagull. I know it sounds a bit naff but they are very decent watches and I had a contact in the US who would offer a discount. I think he was the importer but last time I checked they were around £130 or so.

My collection of well under £300 watches.

Everyday watch Seiko

Slim Swatch Watch

My late fathers gold Smiths watch, presented to him upon his retirement.

The Seiko I've had about 12 years and had the battery replaced about 4 years ago at a cost of £16 at a specialist.
The Swatch Watch keeps perfect time and I've had that about 17 years. 3 batteries in that which is a DIY jobbie.
The Smiths is an old fashioned wind up.

Cost me about £30 from Argos five or six years ago.

Replaced the strap with an Animal Velcro wristband.

Has a nice glow in the dark button.

Even reminds me the day of the week (forgetful in old age)

Has had a couple of battery replacements at around £5 a go.

Worn every day, whether at the office, cleaning the car or fixing up the house.

Each to their own, and I like to have "nice things" but to me a watch is there to tell the time, and as long as it is not day glo pink, I am not much fussed about style.

When it stops working, I will buy something similar.

Casio

Never need to adjust the time.

After having a Rolex Datejust stolen in Nigeria and an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean in Malaysia. I decided to get Citizen World AT, runs off light so never needs batteries, sync's time every evening with the atomic clock and I can adjust the timezone at the push of a button when I travel. Calender is perpetual so basically I just put it on my wrist and it tells me the time, date and is ridiculously accurate.

Some really good bits here, M. I do recommend the Victorinox as good looking watches for the price.

If it were me, as a watch wardrober, I would look at an older, restored mid tier brand. Putting on broken record mode, but there is as little wrong with a used premium watch as there is a used premium car. If you choose the movement carefully and the brand you are getting a quality far in excess of buying a modern day Kia over a 10 year old s class.

You want something dressy? This lends itself to a bi metal. I think this one, re homed on a nice black alligator strap would be a good choice. These guys are a very reputable dealer in preloved watches, and have a big showroom at bank, London, in the royal exchange should you wish to fondle the product. It's 40mm too, which is spot on for modern size tastes.

If it were me, this as a dress watch (assuming you use the others for everyday) will feel a lot more special than a new tissot, as nice aeon nth as they are.

If you want new seiko are good for the movements....

The Maurice Lacroix Sphere Richard mentioned is a nice watch. My daughter got the women's version recently after I found it for her on eBay.

Like new and with its box and all papers, it was about £120 but this was a private sale.

I don't know anything about Frederique Constant though.

I have bought a number of different alpha watches now.

Lots of very well made familiar designs (homages, not fakes), usually with an automatic movement for very little money indeed. Shipping never a problem with delivery from Hong Kong in about 10 days.

Alpha Watch

A definite thumbs up from me although I do suggest using a sacrificial email address when ordering as I suspect the increase in spam I saw was after registering on their site.

The Nokia!

Though perhaps a bit clunky for the French cuffed, hair lacquered, moisturised dandy about town, for me it embodies the essential, timelss qualities of telling the bleeding time, being bounce proof, being instantly replaceable for 20 quid & making phone calls.

I recommend them to all my friends.

Hahaha and, no doubt, a vibrate function for when it's stuck where it belongs lol

I don't get watches at all, but I do enjoy the watch threads on here and like to be educated!
