The reason my daily driver is a Volvo and not MB

Some how much will the 27k V70 be worth compared to the 37K E220 at three years old? I think it would fair to expect your Volvo to be retailed at a main dealer today for 17K?

At the moment Glasses shows dealer retail for the Volvo just short of £17k and the equivalent loaded e class just short of £20k so half way through ownership I'm about £2.5k down on the MB but with the initial discount on the Volvo that puts me ~£2.5k in front, on linear calculations

one of the best cars I have ever owned was a Volvo V70R AWD 234k on the clock when i sold it, on the flip side I replaced it with one of the worst cars I have ever owned, a Volvo V40 T4 - this car was one of the most unreliable cars i have ever driven. after new coil packs, new head gasket, the "misfire" was put down to a cracked block, so after a new engine, we decided that enough was enough, the AC was either hot or cold, as and when it felt like. Gave up and sold it on. Must have been built on a friday by the YTS asbo.

Or it could be that the big Volvos were real Volvos built in the traditional Volvo plants to design drawn up by Volvo engineers and the smaller 40 range was a Mitsubishi Charisma in drag??

We also had an old 850 which we swapped for an S40 and quickly got rid - not unreliable as such but just not got the same feel of quality and durability as the 850.

I personally dont think Mercedes residuals are what they were but that is what happens when you chase volume with cheap lease deals.

I doubt my Aug 2012 E220 CDi AG estate (not sure of spec but it is auto, silver with black leather, appearance pack inc 18s) is worth £20k at 28k miles....

It doesn't seem a lot for having reasonably optioned E-Class estate rather than the V70...just thinking out loud. Interesting all the same.

I have had a V70, which I ran for 40,000 miles with no issues.

A S60 that needed a gearbox (common fault at 100k at that age). Swiftly returned to trader.

An S80 that I had for 18 months. Total bills about £400 over that period, mostly on suspension bits and also a Yaw Sensor. Bear in mind that the car only cost me £1,100 in the first place.

Would I go back to Volvo? Undoubtedly.

Briefly compared to my MB history

W210 - recovered after fuel pump leaked diesel
W203 - 7G Gearbox, Viscous Fan (both warranty)
W211 - Too many to list. A Friday afternoon car, and I wonder about it's mileage
W203 - Port inlet shutoff motor, Oil Cooler
S210 - bits of suspension. Working it's way to injectors though.

The fuel saving between the 2 cars is also just over £1000 in favour of the Volvo, so we are now up to £3.5k so over 4 years the Volvo will be at least £7k better.

The main showstopper for me as well as cost was you couldn't get a 250bhp MB E class estate with a manual gearbox, game over for MB

The implication being that the Merc is worth more than that difference? I think after experiencing both that I would choose the Volvo if the costs were the same (assuming the Volvo has the new auto box and not the crap Geartronic) for the driving I do.

But horses for courses and it would be dull if we all thought the same!

We've had a string of Volvos, currently running a C30 and an XC70, the cars are not without fault, but the customer service is excellent and really beyond anything else experienced, for example, just before we went on holiday the car started to make a whistle, took it in the same day I called, they immediately diagnosed the problem as a failed bearing in the AC compressor, gave me a loan car and repaired it free of charge within 24 hours.

On our previous V70 they replaced a failed valve body in the auto transmission when the car was technically out of warranty with no fuss at all.

They're not exciting, but they are dependable, and you never feel as if you are being ripped off like I used to when running nearly news Mercs (W210 and W211)

I love my Volvos, and Volvo would have to make a seriously rubbish car for me not to buy another when replacement is due.

I also love my W124 and W126.

Yes, in a nutshell.

Then again I'm a bit biased, after all I'm posting on a Merc forum :D

Funny this thread should come up....I am 1 week into 2002 S60 D5 Auto ownership, winter pack, 135k, FVSH+indie, its a 3rd car mile muncher behind my MB's, ....just got back from touring the lakes, initial summary superb comfy seats, nice smooth drive, fab sound system and silly MPG..although I am comparing to my E55 lol

Value for money is unreal, I was looking at getting an early rusty C270cdi (W203) until I saw these, absolute no brainer...we will see.

Volvo forum is ok, a bit straight forward answer back, no banter, but sufficient...I wont be leaving the MB forums so don't worry:thumb:lol

I'm was intrigued as I never considered the V70 as a direct competitor to the E-Class even if it is, so I just looked at the current respective models of both, the Merc really does look £1750 a year better than the Volvo and I think that's actually valve for money on that aspect alone. Not that it's important, only a fleeting point of view from me.

As for not being able to get a manual 250bhp, it's probably just as well cause you'd stuck with it I reckon.

Why would anyone want to buy (£30k+) estate car and want a manual .And as for game over mb I think after 125 years they be ok .

Easy because I hate autos, I want to tell the car what gear its going to be in not the other way round. I meant I will never buy an MB whilst you can't get a manual box in a high power car. At least BMW offer the option of a manual box in any of their cars except true M cars and the 7 series, so come on MB keep up with the competition thats why BMW brand " The Ultimate driving machine" give the customer what they want :thumb: As to MB's slogan "The Best or Nothing" PMSL because at customer service they are one of the worst.
