The World's most expensive painting by a living artist

I am no fan of abstract art, but I fear I would prefer to look at a brick rather than this!

I love you because you are skinny:cool: :):):)

Bless you Malcolm, clothes can be ever so clever and forgiving! ;)

The model works in a job centre and got paid £25 for the sitting. She was on the news (clothed) and said 'it captures me perfectly, I love burying myself in the sofa' Must look up the word 'buried'.

Something tasty for Glojo.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder  and this lady is no doubt happy with what she has done. I like to look at a picture and admire the skill of the artist and examine how they have interpreted the scene, person etc, but no disrespect to anyone. That picture is not something I would want on my wall.  ;) not even if someone paid me.

Can any of our more sophisticated folks educate me as to why that picture is worth so much?

As an aside,
Last night a friend showed me a pastel drawing that he had been given. It was a drawing of both of his dogs, but it was more than a drawing. The picture bought out the mischeivous character of his dogs and several other features which no photograph could portray. That to me is art and that artist had bought life to a picture. The picture was so impressive I can still see the cheeky glint in the eye of one of the critta's. :)

John

Because people are prepared to pay so much ;)

And because the artist has a long and established career and has been a key figure in art for the last 50 years or so. He is very good at what he does and is critically acclaimed for it.

Is any art worth anything? Its a moot point. In this case, I would speculate its viewed more as an investment rather than for its cultural value.

Not my cup of tea, but art and taste are not the same thing.

Show me the money!

I would definitely want it hanging on my wall. If it was I would immediately flog it at Christie's and buy a BIG state of the art plasma TV where I can change the picture I am greeted with everyday. This is just before going out my custom built garage containing several automotive "works of art" to chose which one I am going to drive today. Mmm will it be the MClaren F1 or the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB---decisions decisions.;)

I suppose you could say that as an artist last century posited a urinal can be viewed as a work of art, a car can also be considered the same. ;)

Oh no, no, no. It stays on the wall. It has no value and it is there as a work of art. None of this immediately selling it m'larky.

I will willingly come to your abode and super glue a print of this 'work of art' in your hallway where it can be seen by all for ever and ever.

John

I suppose you could accidentally paper over it by mistake then while redecorating?;) Nothing that good drop of Dulux "Dusted Damson " emulsion and a spraygun couldn't change??

At last something in support, I think.
I don't like it but I support it because it is different. it doesn't choose a nubile model and present us a soft porn view, it gives us an interpretation of the world. The nice pictures you can now take with your camera - they are snapshots. You can also buy other nice pictures (I think) on the TV sales channels but again this isn't art, it is chocolate box stuff for the masses.
For those who say they don't like modern art, let me make a suggestion; take the time to visit a modern art gallery, walk around, be puzzled, bored, horrified, repulsed whatever, but take the time to go all the way through. When you have come out ask yourself if you in any way feel different. Believe it or not, Mrs Tattoo, a one time art historian, with a couple of books to her name, can make the subject quite absorbing and interesting to even the most determined 'I don't know a lot about art but I know what I like' er

My 3 year old can paint better than that etc. etc. ;)

A lot of modern art is rubbish, but plenty isn't. And yes I do like modern art.

I like the idea of a search for meaning, truth even, which in art circles is a little old fashioned (at least 50 years out of date ;))
