I can't help but think, "What's the point?", if someone just makes a note of a plate and car model/colour, they can get plates made cheaply from a number of internet based companies... That way the poor victim doesn't even know their car has been cloned as opposed to returning to a plates stripped car.

Kinda brings home why many of us, me included, are so careful to make sure all reg details are removed from any picture posts of our vehicles. Be careful out there gang!

I personally think that these plates are pointless and also cost approximately £20 more than the "standard" plates which is almost double the cost as I know some places that will print number plates for £20 plus p&p...

If someone really wants to clone someones' car then they wil be discreet by making a note of the registartion number and then printing the plates off themselves through their sources opposed to "advertising" to the victim/owner/Police that the vehicles' identity has possibly been cloned!!!

Edit: When these plates are forced off the vehicle they are designed to shatter into peices so that they cannot be used/fitted onto another vehicle BUT this still does not prevent/address the cloning issue...

Strikes me that to mindless vandals will take great pleasure in "attempting" to remove a plate just to see it shatter. Look forward to the replacement costs on a regular basis:(

The obvious answer is plates that sit behind a glass panel accessed from inside the car.

Think these new plates are a move in the right direction for most thefts, not clones.

Hi,

As it's now necessary to produce (at least) proof of identity to get number plates made up there (apparently) has been an increase in number plate theft. So on that basis this is a step in the right direction.

If it's (apparently) so easy to get a set made up via on-line sources why don't the 'fuzz' order a (some) set(s) and promptly 'nick' the suppliers when they (plates) arrive.

Cheers,

because as far as I know it's not illegal to get the plates made up - you may want them for a display, to mount on your wall etc.

They are only illegal to use on the road - the person supplying them isn't committing an offence.

There are loop holes - if you specify that the plate is a "show plate" than no documentation is required...

Visit www.fancyplates.com and they will send you a pair the next working day for £25 and you can design it however you want.

I have never seen a car without plates front and rear, ie an indiaction they they have been stolen.
Infact i dont think this occurs, I think its more likely that a criminal will note your number and get them made form a mobile van at a car boot sale for a fiver than rip them off your motor.
I think these breakable plates are another idea by someone to make a few quid.

Not in Scotland !

That law only applies south of the border . Not sure about Wales ?

I've had two sets made up in Halfords over the last 3 months - never was I asked for anything - except money !

sorry but I LOL when i read: Mr Ladyman ....:p :p

That's exactly what I thought when I heard this last night. Exactly how much of a problem is it?

Tail wagging the dog, I reckon.

I have !

Last year I saw a black Rolls-Royce Phantom being driven sedately alnog the M8 without any numberplates . It did have a rather natty coat of arms above the windscreen though :p

I think the police were onto the old dear dressed in a pink outfit in the back seat & her hubby with her ; she was being preceeded by about 4 police motorcycles and followed by a couple of traffic cars .

No doubt they were either escorting her to the nearest halfords so she could get some made up or else looking for a suitable spot to pull her over :D

Hi,

Is that like getting a NI number using false documents

Well I think this is a silly loophole:eek: . The Law should close it (IMHO). Number plates (perhaps) should contain a 'highly visible watermark' (fancy pattern etc) to cut down on cloning etc. Then 'show plates' could be made up of current 'stuff'.

Scotland should include itself, methinks.

I'm out looking for cars like mine so I can put a 'show plate' on them and go speeding and not pay congestion charge etc ;) .

Yippee, what a wonderful Country we live in ;)

Cheers,

I work in the 'business' and I can assure you plates do get stolen everyday. My opinion is that kids are stealing them, like they steal badges. eg little Tw*t face will steal a plate ending in LTF etc. Car ringers will simply have ghost plates made up on line etc.

so you work in the "business"
is that the business of stealing plates, LOL:D

No ringing cars!!! joke by the way mods. Am one of the good guys.

I'm surprised the UK still has plastic laminated plates when the rest of Europe has stamped-metal ones. That would certainly slow down the cloning, as for plate theft I reckon the answer is self-adhesive tabs! I destroyed my old plates trying to pull them off my car when I had shiny new EU ones made up!

In France they are trialling plates embedded with a chip (or should that be 'frite').

Our government would probably rather embed the chip in us!

RFID chips in the number plate would be a good way to track cars me thinks
