Yesterday, while taking my new (for me) car home, it started to develop an overheating problem. I thought it was a sticky thermostat, so this morning I set about pulling the thermostat to test. I was shocked to find the following when I cracked open the thermostat housing:

Also, the car developed an oil pressure problem. That is to say, the oil pressure went down to close to zero. This morning, however, the oil pressure was back up to normal.
Could these two problems have been due to the fact that the car was laid out for over a year? Or could a leaky exaust have anything to do with it?
Oh, and btw, it is a 1984 230E.
