Car
Alfa GTV 3.0
We've had the E55 for 18 months now and it's a fantastic car but there are a couple of little itches I feel like scratching so it may be time for a change.

It would be most unfair to say that I'm getting bored with it because I'm not but the kids are a bit older now so they seldom want to be seen out with us (that much is a bonus) and in the last 8 months I've done just over 2000 miles (which included a 400 mile round trip) so I have less need for a 'practical car' and it's just not getting the use it should be.

Hmmmm, maybe it's time to start writing an advert?

So what's going to take its place?

something completely impractical

there's a short list but it's changing daily :)

possibly an Alfa GTV (3 litre V6), possibly an old Citroen CX (if I can get my hands on the one I'm after), maybe an old 911 or maybe just a 200bhp motor for the beetle I'm restoring.

Not sure yet really - I just fancy a change

Scrap.

Stylish retro scrap.

maybe an old 911

Scrap (and you'll have to stay at home if it rains)

or maybe just a 200bhp motor for the beetle I'm restoring.

Lunacy.

If you ditch the 55 for any of the above you need sectioning...

2,000 miles in eight months! - why do you even have a car? Even I could afford the petrol bill for an E55 if I could keep the mileage that low.

BTW - good to see you posting again

it's about scratching an itch :)

OK, Alfas have a reputation for rust but so do Mercs. As for Alfas other known weakness - electrics, well, my W124 cost me more with a new loom than if I added the costs of all my previous three Alfas electrical problems together. The 3.0 and 3.2 GTVs are appealing (well to me anyway) and are certainly fun to drive

Citroen - retro, yes, over engineered, yes and very, very stylish the one I'm waiting for is a 2.5 GTE which is more than quick enough for UK roads

Porsche, fun in the wet - it just depends how you drive them

Beetle lump - 200 bhp makes for a rapid beetle and some fun at Santa Pod next summer and not far short of E55 0-60 times at the traffic lights ;) Lunacy maybe but it's something that provides a lot of smiles for the money

It's not about ditching the E55, we've had it for 18 months and in the first year I did 14k miles in it so I've certainly used it

Now because my mileage is so low, I don't need to worry about practical, we have other cars for that :)

Rayny - I have a car because I can :)

Alfas not only rust, but fall to bits on a daily basis too, CXs slightly less so, but working on them is not for the weakwilled, old Porsches are just horrid...

Best stick to Mercs.

If you want something weird, how about a 500E?

drugs are BAD

old Porsches are just horrid...

you have obviously been taking drugs.. new porsces i would agree are a bit bland (like a lot of the other newish 'high end' cars)

had a 911 (930) carrerra myslef, been driving mates 930 turbo a fair bit and another friend of mine has got a 911t

lovely cars :thumb:

There are itches and itches. Some need scratching, others if scratched lead to disaster. If you're going to scratch this one do so with caution. :D

Old nautical saying. Better to be in port wishing you were out at sea than being out at sea wishing you were in port.

If its less of a practical car that you are after, what about a R129 SL500, excellent cars, reliable and still fun!

Also there is a good chance that you could px the practical E55 for one, as most people have to give up fun for practical.

I sympathise Andy and when I scratched my itch last month this is what replaced the E55; no doubt equally as unattratcive to the assembled masses as an old Citroen and Alfa - but each to their own I say:

Actually, I still have the E55 and whilst it is technically for sale I just may end up keeping it in the garage. Just negotiated an excellent limited mileage insurance policy.....

The E55 will be fairly hard to follow....have you thought about it's chav brother - an M BMW?

I ran an M3 for 2 yrs and it cost me almost zero. It took a lot of elbow grease to wipe the phlegm off but otherwise it was a joy.

I can definately recomend getting an old 911 (930). If you purchase a well looked after example you will be amazed of how well built and reliable these cars are. My brother has a red 930 supersport back in Greece which I use every time I am down there.

Loads of fun to drive and very relaible. For an old car there is not even a drop of oil from the engine, no smoke and still hits 140mph (in a track) although you do feel it when you reach that speed.
