My Mrs and I don't really need two cars anymore, but we occasionally need the two.
So I like big comfy cars for the long journeys, hauling stuff about and towing my bikes.
So what are peoples thoughts on early(as in cheapest out there) GLs, I'd prefer a 420 but the 320 would do.
What are the pros and cons. And what to look for etc
I've had 2007 era S class and RR sports, so this is in a similar category.

Edit to ad, it generally wouldn't get used that much as we have the c class cabrio for daily duties.

Well strange you should ask about the GL,not getting out too much in the car but today on the A120 a black 58 reg 420 went by me and I thought that the car had worn well, may well have had 90 grand on the clock, but it looked good, have never owned one so cannot answer you questions, but sure there will a few who have on here.

They are nice cars, just bare in mind they are very big so manoeuvring in some circumstances will be a bit tricky. I’d love to get one at some point myself......

We don't live in the city, most of the other vehicles are big range rovers and the like, parking isn't a problem.
Apart from the completely pointless aspect of them I like them more than anything else is the price range and type/comfort of vehicle.

I have various cars and 2 1/2 years ago I decided I could really use a 7 seater, children and grand children numbers haha. I found a 2008 GL420 in silver with 95000 miles on the clock. I got rid of my 2002 Grand Cherokee after getting the GL Merc.
I must say it is an amazing vehicle, the shape has weathered very well and it is so comfortable.
I chose the vehicle as the rear two seats are full sized and are electric operated to fold up and down.
I was advised by a friend to go for the 420 as he had previously owned both variants.
The car does not sound like a diesel at all and has a nice noise to it.
A great tow vehicle, I have hired a car transporter trailer on several occasions to move classic cars for another friend and it copes very well.
On a long run being semi-sensible you can see 28 to 29 mpg, however obviously locally for short journeys it is less.
For such a big vehicle it can certainly accelerate quickly and has a very good top speed as well.
Since owning it I have spent a reasonable amount on it but it is going to be a very long term "keeper".
I have had all new air shocks replaced, new discs and pads all round, new brake pipes and the flexi brake pipes as well while they were at it.
I added AMG alloys ( I bought from a friend who now has a 2018 AMG version ) with summer tyres and the original alloys now have Nokian winter tyres fitted to them.
It did not have full history so I had a local independent Mercedes specialist give it a full service and they said it was in good order.
So from my point of view the early GL is a great car to own.

Great cars. They’re fundamentally the same car as the ML/R which might might open up a few more options. They’re all great got relaxed wafting and towing.
