Thinking of leaving the fold...

What about:- Audi S4, BMW M3, Maserati 3200, Mitsubishi Evo IX, Nissan Skyline, Porsche 911 (964), Renaultsport Megane, Seat Leon Cupra, Subaru Impreza STi, VW Golf R32, Volvo S60 T5

Or you could just stick with MB which I agree do have a special feel and go for something bigger with more clout, as suggested any of the AMG cars would probably fit the bill.

Some great advice and suggestions on this thread, thanks all.

I definitely need to drive the Civic as my driving style has changed more recently and I prefer low down torque rather than revving the engine to bits so I may not enjoy it. This is quite the opposite of how I used to like to drive :devil:

I would love an AMG, but I'm 26 with a rather decorated past (few write off's here ‘n there, the usual stuff...) and so insurance is going to be an important factor. As is MPG, I drive minimum 200 miles per week so I need something with reasonable economy. Before I purchased the Coupe an RX8 was on the cards, however the very poor economy put me off it in the end.

Seems a 05 CLK may be within reach... time to do a little more research.
Don't think I could make do with an SLK as I do carry passengers semi-regularly.

Have you looked at leasing?

My ex collegue least at the time the previous Type R, last model with great recaro seats etc for £189 a month over 2 years.

That was 10K limit but excess millage was 5p a mile.

Seems a cheap way of having a new car and not worrying too much?

R34 GT-R Skyline would be good. Twin Turbo 270+ Bhp.
or the GT-T Skyline if you want a bit more economy.

The Ducks nuts would be an E39 M5 for 10 grand and you got spare change for fuel plus Mods.

I think the OP is governed by A) Age B) Driving record...

Have you had a quote for a type R ?

Also and I HATE to say this what about a 120d BM? given your millage? a remap on one of those is a handy bit of kit :)

I agree with Ollie, Will etc. and say get an

///AMG car

If you like coupes, the CLK55 is astonishing value as a used buy. You talk about MPG now, drive one and see if you care afterwards!

Whatever you decide, have fun in the search and enjoy the results!

Agreed :)

Saying that the CLK55 isn't that bad. I have a 200mile round trip coming up on Saturday and I am talking the Merc as it gives better MPG than my 2.7 TDV6 Discovery.

Hmmm perhaps I really should think about a Polo Bluemotion as a 3rd car!

Bloke at work has an 04 typre r has owned it for 4 years and nothing not one thing has gone wrong in that time apart from servicing!

Cant say that about any merc:D

Another bloke has accord type s only for 6 months so far and has replaced rear pads.

I would defo agree with the tinny noise comments and feel of the car, even shutting the doors it sounds thin, no satisfying clunk, then looking at the floor and seeing the little bits of rust raining down:eek:

If you managed to get bored with your current Mercedes in just over a year, how long will it take you to get bored constantly revving the nuts off the Civic ?

Treat your current car to a thorough pro-valet and reconsider it.

You might just learn to love it for what it is - a good car rather than a toy. Remember that the road is not a scalextrix track.

I've been quoted around £900 for insurance on the type R which is not too bad - I can stomach that. Having said that it is double what I pay on my Coupe!

I don't think I could bear the shame of a 120d hatchback  I do like the 1 series coupe, but then they are still around £20k used.

I popped down to Car Giant last night to have a look around. The CLK and BMW E90 coupes are very good value for money. The E90 is very nice on the outside, however unless it is a high spec car the interior is a bit plain. The CLK with AMG kit looks lovely (they had a couple in black) and the interior is almost the same as my coupe, which I like.

Argh this seems to be getting harder - thanks guys

Easy to say when you drive a 500 matey! The C180 is a little underpowered IMO.

No point in valeting my car really, I keep it very very clean :D

Don't buy from car giant, them lot are Mr. T.Watts.

If you're going to get a jap car it has to be a turbo car. Type R sounds fast but goes slow.

Nissan 350Z is a fun car but gutless compared to the M3 unless you put a turbo in it with your spare change which i highly recommend.

reasonably reliable too and cheap as chips these days.

I would never buy a car from Car Giant, I just like to brows around as they have a wide selection of cars.

350Z is a nice car, again one I would love to own. However it only has 2 seats so same problem as an SLK.:wallbash:

2002 e500 ge the tip auto theres one on the bay 60k going for 7grand... what else more do you want.. than 300bhp and a v8

I bought my S500 for a less than your budget :thumb:

So I went to see the Type R on the weekend. They had a pre-reg car with sat nav that I sat in. The interior is nice and sat nav 'looks' pretty tricked out. However the plastics do feel a little cheap and everything is a little tinny.

After speaking to a sales man, he quietly suggested I look for something else as the Type R is not a comfortable car on any sort of long journey!

I've booked a test drive this weekend to see for myself; however I think the Type R is most definitely ruled out now.

I may hold on to the Coupe a little longer now, save some more money and get a CLK or E90 coupe... the search goes on.

agreed. a friend of mine bought a type r when they came out... tried selling it after a few months, detested the comfort, and as he's an estate agent (damn them) he did a fair bit of driving to and from places for meets. also, to be, they look fast, go slow. if you had a name like "Type-R" i would expect something to make me trickle in my pants...

Though I've not driven it yet, all the online reviews state the same thing. Very harsh ride and they are not as fast as they look.

The advice and comments on this forum have helped a lot. I sometimes get these crazy ideas in my head and then manage to convince myself it is the best idea ever

So on to the next idea :D I'm going to spend a little money on the coupe sorting out a couple of niggles, and maybe some upgrades (ipod, phone and Comand are on the hotlist). That should keep me happy for a while until the right car comes along.

I test drove type R yrs ago when buying my coupe(also S2000).
They are not bad, but I did not feel they were as classy. Also, the characteristics encourage one to drive them fast & to the limit, whereas one is more likely to cruise in an MB.
Obviously the type R is a lot faster re acceleration, but what good is that if you don't have a licence or are unable to drive through an accident?
If you are used to an MB, then I would suggest your shortlist should include MBs as above, Alfas- they do a nice coupe, BMWs, Audis, Nissan 350, possibly Volvo C30/70
Good luck
