Hi Guys,

I've been contemplating this for a while now, there's alot of makes and sizes and RMS outputs out there, so any suggestions here are most welcome. I'd also like suggestions as to what is more suited to the 202 (Space wise), i'm thinking of putting it in the little well where the spare wheel is.

Hopefully this will improve the sound alot more, and give my poor speakers a rest from the bass, my door cards are starting to get a bit old and sometimes they rattle !

I'd sacrifice some boot space, use the wheel well area for storage.

I fitted a Vibe Slick sub / amp kit, which is way better than I expected for the money. Not too big either. You'll want to add a bit of cash for a protective grill too.

My mate has a 12" JBL sub in a ported JBL box and an infinity amp he wants to sell. PM me if you are interested and I'll put you in touch/find out more.

In the boot of my W202 I have a 12" Kenwood sub in a box. I didn't like the idea of being without a spare wheel. Mine is a wedge shaped box laying on it's back so I still have a fair bit of boot space left.

I wasn't thinking of taking the wheel out at all, its just i think i've seen a picture on the forum of someone's w202 where he put his sub in the little well thing that holds the spare wheel in the boot, if you know what i mean.

One neat solution - assuming the car is a saloon - is to mount the woofers in the rear shelf and vent them into the boot area. This is colloquially known as Infinite Baffle

If you seal any gaps between the boot & car, mount the speakers solidly (on MDF, masticked & bolted to the shelf) and use appropriate speakers the final results will be superb. And you'll lose almost no space - just the depth of the driver below the rear shelf

If you need to know more search for Orca's Infinite Baffle setup in his W124 300CE on talkaudio.co.uk

I keep forgetting to take photos of my current set up. 1000watt Sony Expod amp and sub.

Sub sits in the corner of the boot with the amp attached to the sides. I have removed the speakers from the parcelshelf with only the grill in place to create more bass.

if I crank it up, the drivers wingmirror shakes so much you cant clearly see whats reflected in it :D

Ps, I have a 500watt JENSON amp for sale if intrested?

:dk: Do you have Low Riders like we do over here on this side of the Pond in the East Los Angeles???? They all have 1000 Watt SUBS and playing music that makes the car hop to the bass beat .... if you know what I mean!:D

:thumb: Wow! That's exactly what I mean!!!

But, don't see the 1000W Subs listed... maybe that's why it only got one bid?:dk:

As an aside, a mate of mine is installing these into his saab at the weekend, I'll let you all know what I think.

Is it a sub-amp combo? I really want to have both to get the best out of the sound system i've got in my car at the moment.

:thumb: WOW! only 100 #Sterling!!! What a deal on your side of the Pond....

Yes, it is a Sub-Amp combo... just set the loss pass @ 150 Hz, crank the amp up to 200W and let the car rock n' roll!!!!

Or set the LPF to 50Hz and let the car hop along to the beat! :)

For my last three cars , I have been using KEF B139's , which are widely held to be the finest Hi-Fi low frequency unit ever produced , being widely used by manufacturers such as Linn , Radford , Ferrograph and many others besides KEF themselves and , of course , IMF who are famous for their transmission line loudspeakers , like the TLS 80's I have in my living room .

It just so happens that , with W201 and W126 models , that if you pop out the plastic first aid kit carrier , the aperture left in the metal shelf underneath is a perfect fit for a B139 . In each of my cars I have fabricated an MDF shelf to mount the units in and then placed material over the top to obtain an 'invisible' installation . No damage is done to the car and the installation is completely reversible . In the case of the 190E 2.6 I trimmed the shelf in some black 'contract' carpet which matched the interior of the car and was transparent to the bass notes , the coaxial speakers at each side were fitted with the supplied covers .

With the W126 , an added bonus comes in the shelf accomodating 2x B139's , thanks to the twin apertures in the shelf , coaxial speakers being fitted in the existing 'pods' . On this car , I used a double layer of 2x 18mm MDF sandwiched together for rigidity .

Electronics in each case were mounted on an MDF sheet fitted in front of the petrol tank .

Here are a few pics

Firstly , a B139 lined up over the first aid kit lid in a 190E

The Sony XRC900RDS head unit installed in the dash of the W126 , I have an identical unit in the W201 , these are both 'flagship' radio cassette units with no onboard amplification and , importantly , the display can be set to completely blank when driving so is not a distraction . I also have the CD version , the CDX910 but it lacks the diversity tuner and telephone mute facilities , so is currently in storage in the attic . These are still widely regarded , 20 years on as amongst the best head units ever made .

The sound from the B139's is very natural with extended bass and no hint of 'booming' . The other speakers are JBL units , but I am always looking out for some of the elusive KEF KAR units produced in the 1980's .

Holy Crap Batman. Do you drive it or just dock with something. Dont ever drive past yon place in Yorkshire (Filingsdale?) You'll have them off the air!!

A slight change of subject, but is anyone here running a Super Audio CD (SACD) and/or DVD-Audio system in their car?

Both formats offer 5.1 rather than stereo 2-channel output, and the sampling is at a much higher rate than CDs, giving very high fidelity. I'm currently building up a collection of SACDs and am considering a 5.1 set up in the car.

I haven't personally seen one , but I know they do exist . Quite a few of the newer cars , in fact , come with a front centre speaker for this reason . I'd think some of the in-car DVD players with flip-up screens probably have a 5.1 output and play DVD audio discs ( different from DVD video ) as well .

I'd probably start by looking at some of the manufacturer's websites , or checking out some of the specialist car audio dealers .

There are also some web forums dedicated to in car audio , so probably worth looking there .

Sorry , I can't be of more help .

SACD came out years ago and died a mini-disc style death didnt it?

:thumb: Ya, and I think you used the discs for target practice ... for your M1911 .45ACP or is that a .380 PPK??? :D
