hi, i have a 1997 c230 auto and im presently getting about 200 miles to a tank, is this normal?? im sure my e280 uses less

Not around town you won't get 400 miles to a tank ...

Are we talking around town or on the motorway ?

around town, was hoping for about 300 but it just seems to guzzle it

I get about 250-280 in my 4.3 V8 , so i would be surprised if you couldn't hit 300.

Do you have a heavy right foot ?

not really, im not slow but i dont drive with my foot on the floor

Had a similar problem in a 2001 w202 230kompressor sport. is there a rattle from the engine around 1900rpm and 2300rpm? if there is a rattle it could be your hydraulic tapids. That was our problem and it guzzled petrol. hope this might help :)

Wife's slk 230k does about 250 per tank (until light on) around town with a short commute, but will achieve closer to 400 on a steady long cruise.
It may depend on how hard you drive it, I'd guess I could get my wife's car down to around 200 per tank with a bit of effort!
Common cause of poor fuel consumption is often failed Lamda sensors, which are a reasonably cheep fix. Fault codes?

Tire pressures correct?
When did you last check them?

the best I did on my E280 was 465 miles and on my old 99 C240 around town was getting +/- 290

iv not got that heavy a foot, lambda probe does make sense though, i reakon its gonna be a plug in job :-(

Make sure it is fully serviced too and the filters are clean. This will help a great deal.
